I followed the readme but I don't get any text ingame, so what should I try to fix that?

I'm running windows XP Professional. I installed the game from DVD. I followed the installation instructions in the readme and allowed it to overwrite files. I installed the font into my font directory in my windows folder, it said the font was installed. I get no text in the game.
