I'm trying out the AJT JP1K deck, and am a little confused on the instructions.
According to the order listed, you reveal the furigana first, and then see if you can recall the meaning of the kanji. But that way, I'm using the hiragana to figure out the meaning of the kanji instead of deriving the meaning from the kanji itself. So my brain is trained to basically ignore the kanji, right? I think I lasted like 3 days with one. learning words directly can seem overwhelming for the first week but you quickly get used to it and then the kanji and the readings start to repeat making it even easier. as an esl i always used english subtitles when i watched tv shows and movies. the only stuff i watched without subs were youtube videos

my listening improved without doing "raw listening" but i gotta be honest at some point i had to stop relying on subs to improve my listening when it comes to tv shows and movies cuz those fuckers mumble a lot but when it comes to youtube i understand everything

i used to put a 2 second delay on subs so that i would hear the line first then see check if i understood everything correctly
