I'd say that both Muv-Luv alternative and Baldr sky have pretty decent reasons of having mechs other than to create sci-fish feel. But in both cases the mechas really aint the focus of their stories, they are just tools that exist in their worlds. Or do you call FSN a cooking VN because it has a lot of cooking? (well that was a bit extreme example tough) For those reasons I dont really call Baldr or alternative mech VNs.

For those wondering why both of them has mechs:
In Alternative case its their humans answer how to fight agains aliens that are trying to devour humanity and the size of those aliens range from 3-50 meters, so yeah any other method they came up really wasnt effective, so they ended up creating mechs, also the first invented mechs in alternative were extremely clumsy.

In Baldr mechs are literally programs that are implanted/downloaded to your brain which you can activate when you are in virtual world, and in there they are pretty much used to defend yourself from physical manifestation of viruses and things like that or other people. And they are mechs because they are shaped like humanoids so people could have easier time to project themselves in them. Also there are no mechs in real world in baldr, mechs stay only in virtual. Well the mechs could also be considered more like power armors in this case.
