World building. Aside from the canon there are an insane number of fanworks. People have their own takes on every character and every bit of gensokyo lore.
Then there are spinoffs like cookie and yukkuri autism.
I don't get how people talk about idols and vtubers so much. Do people do the same for them? They get skillful fanart and expert photography sure but I don't see the same freedom for characterization and world building in those fandoms, for obvious reasons. Idol songs might get some good remixes at best but touhou has that too on top of everything else.
Touhou has inspired many other artists and game devs as well, as it is one of the most prolific indie series of all time.
And finally, even if you're a coomer, you can love touhous based on their entirely fictional existence. They aren't some sweaty thot who sees you as a source of income and nothing else, and also gets dicked down by men they actually respect, you cuck.
And it might sound a but hypocritical saying that after mentioning cookie but if anything that just shows touhous can do the jobs of idols and vtubers at the same time.

What are those reasons? Plenty of series have detailed characters but still get fanfiction and whatnot.

Yeah I guess you're right. I've seen vtubers promoting lore videos on themselves too, so plenty of doujin works can be made from them. As for idols, there isn't much of a market for fanfiction. Doujinshi with 2d versions of them could be cool but they're very uncommon. Idols have their own benefits other than that I'm sure, but I prefer 2hu because not a single part of them exists outside of fiction.
The potential exists in other fandoms but I don't see it being explored nearly as much as 2hu.

Idols and VTubers are real. You can have parasocial relationships with them. They produce a consistent stream of content for you to engage with. Tohous are just cartoons lewdly drawn by old men to pander to kimoota.
