[20:45:56] <kViN> Ixrec, please say "No I won't absolutely ignore Extra and Unlimited if Alternative wins"
[20:46:02] <kViN> so I can paste it every time someone says we shouldn't vote for MLA
[20:46:14] * Ixrec|asleep is now known as Ixrec
[20:46:32] <&Ixrec> there is a strong possibility I will translate a significant portion of Extra and Unlimited in the event Alternative wins
---
<Ixrec> Swan Song's pretty easy, yeah
<izmos> and you liked it right
<Ixrec> there's one scene with a bunch of Buddhist terminology I didn't know
<Ixrec> 9.5/10 yeah, just a little
<Ixrec> and that's it unless you find text walls hard
<izmos> seems like to me it's a pretty good idea to do it as a side project indeed. I can only see it or some really large stuff to win
<Ixrec> if something huge wins
<Ixrec> like the rules say
<Ixrec> the runner up will likely be done between partials
<Ixrec> unless runner up is also huge
<Ixrec> then I'll just make an executive decision and everyone will live with it
<izmos> which means that if Swan song gets to be the top second it'll be translated, unless for some reason a surprising short/medium vn wins

Reading his review of Saya and Baldr Sky, I'm starting to dislike that Ixrec guy, especially his overuse of "original", "unoriginal" and "predictable" in his reviews.
I'm starting to understand why he loved Code Geass.

Oh well at least he translates VNs and he is fast at it too.

Not saying anything else, I do think 8/10 is a good score for Saya.
I just dislike the reasons he wrote in his review.
But that's just me, I just can't take anyone who write "original" or "predictable" in a review seriously.

It just make it seem that the reviewer is a fan of some LOLSORANDUM plot-twists, which he may be considering he loves Code Geass and Elfen Lied.

Every well written stories can be predictable if it follows some real thematic from the beginning to the end, and originality died a long time ago, the only thing that should be reviewed is the pure execution.

>> No.3746781

>>3746690
I guess he values 'originality' and 'unpredictability' a lot, though unfortunately there's not much of that to find in the VN medium (or even literature in general, it seems these days). There's certain things that work well and that people will go for most of the time, so there's no point in taking risks in something that's meant to attract buyers.

Pros: Coodere Heroine, Lesbian Heroine, Yandere Heroine, most heriones are really charming, decent CGs, good humor, really great character interaction, some of the best-in-class character archtypes.

Cons: Drama is a hit and miss for some people. Humor can also be a hit and miss for some people.”

Personally I don't see the whole lesbian thing as a pro or con, I just copied and pasted the info intact.

I would like to see the game translated because I liked the interactions between the characters, the humour and the cg/char artwork. It's also the first vn I tried to read with Atlas (but due to the length and crappy computer translation, I ended up dropping it, as I figured I was missing too much).

I'm voting for Swan Song. I like the idea of a survival story. Baldr Sky and MuvLuv have good reputations, but their themes have failed to intrigue me thus far. Maybe if I knew more about them I'd be more hyped about one of them winning.

If I really need to pick a VN to be translated, I'd rather start with something a little different, rather than something fresh off the 'Been there, done that' express.

So guys, posting to say that the only real choice here is Kara no Shoujo. Do you enjoy your Umineko murders and detective work? Good, then vote for something which also has a story with murders, guro, and where a point and click mechanic works and makes you actually search for your clues in order to reach the end. Oh, the ending is also very depressing and all sorts of awesome, so take that in consideration.

So, yeah, vote KARA NO SHOUJO.

In a related note, Comyu. It's scores have gotten quite a lot better than what they were at some point, but they're still in the mid-70s range. Sorry to interject, but that script has been TLC'd, edited here and back multiple times, and it's really different than Loss' translation by now.
Phar, our main TL went through it and changed it to his own style, as we'd like to avoid discrepancies, and noticeably different translation styles caused by the multiple translators.
><Phar> oh that, it originally says classified by the 'critics'
><Phar> I figured this sounded better.
It says in the comment too down there as you can probably see.
>// Was: 'Well, after all the arts are to be certificated by critics.' lit: 'Well, what classifies as art is up to the critics.'
Koudai really has his own peculiar style and the english line is totally in his character (obviously you won't find Eye of Beholder anywhere). If you really want to blame something for that line, then blame me or the generous editing by the editor.

Well, the main point is that the expression given by the original line and the 'beholder' line are quite different - in the original, he's saying that critics (the use of 評論家先生 clearly don't mean just anyone but Actual, Important People) classify that which is Art - rather than a generic statement that people have different views on what counts as Art.

But otherwise, thanks for the translations, they're all working real good (;

It's fairly low on outright translation errors, but suffers from being 'smoothed' probably partly because of translator inexperience and overaggressive editing. It usually goes something like:

1) Translator doesn't quite understand a complicated line, so he translates to a less complicated form that delivers much the same message but without less expressiveness and detail.
2) Translation checker sees it and either gives it the okay or, in most of the cases I've seen, smooths it down even more.
3) Editor isn't exactly sure what the translator's English is saying, because it's still fairly close in structure to the original Japanese line, and rewrites it in proper English, but this ends up being another simplification.

I suppose it's basically like resaving a JPG a bunch of times. Not a problem generally, but I'm more worried about this same translator working on G Senjou no Maou, which contains a lot more 'tricky lines', several of which you can see in the stuff that's already been translation checked by the new translator - we're talking generally stuff like not knowing who Perry is (missing that reference), stuff that is generally not all that important to the plot by itself but overall dumbs the work down. Not something people will enjoy as much as they could have otherwise.

>> No.3749527

>>3749518
Yeah, it's more correct a line, even if it does sound like ass.

English isn't my native language either but I would probably go for something more like:
"Well, what's art and what isn't art is something that's decided by the powers that be anyway.", swapping out 'powers that be' for a better sounding relevant idiom as necessary.

I suppose I just don't like using the word 'critic' here, so I can understand why that was replaced, but in the process the meaning was altered, and I feel that much should be avoided.

>> No.3749529

>>3749515
There was no translation checker in the Sharin no Kuni project, but yeah I can see how that could happen a lot. I consider stuff like that to be expected from fan translations though, it's not like there's a bunch of people who want to translate visual novels, people just have to take what they can get.

>Perry
Who?

Oh and remember, TLWiki is an open project. If you see a translation error, you could always just correct it yourself.

Everything depends. You also have hard to translate mango/animu and easy to translate eroges.

I'd say that you have to put 50% or 100% more effort in translating an eroge (not counting average length) than a manga, given that they're similar (or an adaptation).
