If you're a beginner, please read the guide first.

Updated guide: https://tatsumoto.neocities.org/
Japanese resources: https://tatsumoto.neocities.org/blog/resources.html
Japanese Mega Learning Pack: https://nyaa.si/view/1372367

Daily reminder: targeted sentence cards are the most effective way to combine Anki with immersion.

Things to avoid:
・Anime cards (the guide by QM). It recommends words cards, which are proven to be less effective than targeted sentence cards (TSCs).
・Core 2.3k. It is based on a very old corpus and sorted in a way that makes learning harder. Try Ankidrone Starter Pack instead.
・Anacreon. Anacreon is an infamous spammer. He constantly hijacks our threads to shill his shit.
・Tadoku. A commercial site that pushes stories for learners (basically scam). The core principle of immersion learning is to consume native content. Just watch more anime or read manga.

results of my year with no anki:

anki works, it lets you remember words faster and more easily. i'm sure my vocab increased naturally without anki but it'd have been more if i hadn't quit. at least that's my impression. i always thought anki worked and never engaged in the shitposting wars, i just stopped cause it was tedious. but for the less common words its definitely a useful tool. might start it back up at a more manageable pace so i dont burn out again.

99.999% of people on lit can't even rate jap literature cause they can't read the fuckin language
translations are not sufficient since they will never accurately represent the original text just by the nature of how they are produced, namely by a translator who rewrites literally the entire thing in another language based on how he understood the original text
this applies to translations of other languages as well of course, an actual good literature ranking would either be separated by original language or only allow voting for works that a user has read in it's original language

by reading you'll come across words that you'll easily be able to look up. on the other hand, if you go straight into listening, you'll have to deal with not just with learning basic words, but also with having to discern lots of homophones and near-homophones.
learning a word through reading makes it easier to recognize it by ear than vice-versa, but you might not necessarily recognize every single word spoken out loud that you would recognize in a written text.

The fact that people learn isolated languages as adulys that are spoken in only one country that is of secondary or maybe even tertiary level importance on a world level in comparison to other languages should be surprising instead.

written language and spoken language both fork off from language, but written language often includes conventions and formalisms that would never appear in spoken language. for example, commas and parentheses are often used to separate clasues that are not exactly related to the main sentence but are still forced to be part of it, even though, if spoken out loud, it could seem as if they're separate sentences, since the use of these punctuation marks might allow people to omit conjunctions that would ordinarily be used to provide flow and logical order in the sentence.

top of my head, you can do that verbatim, anonymously, without mods caring, on:

>soijak party
>7chan
>yiluata
>420chan
>99chan
><span class="sjis">some 5ch boards and other Japanese BBS, depending on the atmosphere</span>
there are also plenty of other anonymous imageboards where you can rudely and gratingly point out the flaws of what other people are saying without getting banned, but you get banned for being off-topic at all or just repeatedly calling people stupid cunts without elaborating. plenty of people come here for the latter.
https://stormy-skies.neocities.org/list/chanlist.html

i use some of them daily, only lurk on the Japanese ones usually for lack of anything to comment and rarely post on the others. Where none of these truly have equivalent to 4chan is that on most popular boards you get a constant flow of information, replies, arguments, etc. with forum-like equal representation.
people come here over social media because you don't get that direct interaction on those platforms, even if the volume is much greater.
people come here over other imageboards because they prefer spontaneity and volume over a slower, more consistent experience

tl;dr none of these are unique to reddit except in the exact terms.

all occur on here, and most other places where you get people posting just to win arguments over reconsidering their positions and others. it's not better or worse to do it someplace or another beyond putting an identity to it.
i just use reddit for aggregation of content, don't care if others use it for comments if they get something out of it. i use a twitter for jp art and that's about it for what is considered social media.

>you can accuse somebody of being transphobic and of having internalized racism/ableism if you want to offend them without directly pointing out what is incorrect about what they posted
people mostly have thicker skins about being insulted on 4chan, but slapping a label on someone as a reply instead of addressing what they actually said is pretty common, especially among uppercasers.
the real offense in that on 4chan is making a post dedicated to denying an interesting response. you don't even need to care or have an actual opinion about a topic to do that
>you can cite some random "scientific" paper that backs up your belief and say "Researchers said that, not me", so as to make it seem like you're merely referring to higher authorities than yourself
if someone actually cites something on 4chan and i can pull it up on https://sci-hub.st/ , i'll read it.
in many cases you don't have to assume that the existence of it in academia lends it validity. if i can't pull it up, i'll ask for a copy. the only thing which is really grating is people getting pissy at even basing your argument on something long-form and more established than yourself, as if saying you've read it, picking out relevant quotes/pages, and suggesting the other person read it is trolling by itself. if i don't want to read it or think it is irrelevant, i just say so and end the argument there
there is at least one imageboard i browse where this is common, and usually doesn't concern flamebait so people aren't obsessed with disowning a citation beyond what it actually says
>you can use "Everyone has the right to have their personal opinion, so I hope we can respect each others' differences of opinion" as your last resource
resource in what?
it's not a resource in argument, but a particular way to end an argument without conceding it and getting the last word in. on 4chan it would just be "fuck off," kys, replying with a soijak and greentext without directly replying, etc.
if i cannot refute a point or agree with it, i actually just reply and say so regardless of the site or IRL.
if i think an argument is in bad faith, i comment once, and if they just reject that and continue in the same way i just don't respond. they win in their mind, no skin off my back. i just want new ideas and ways of thinking about things.

>Dune, also known as the Dune Chronicles, is a science fiction media franchise that originated with the 1965 novel Dune by Frank Herbert and has continued to add new publications. Dune is frequently described as the best selling science fiction novel in history.[1][2] It won the inaugural Nebula Award for Best Novel in 1965 and the 1966 Hugo Award, and was later adapted into a 1984 film, a 2000 television miniseries, and a 2021 film. Herbert wrote five sequels, the first two of which were adapted as a miniseries called Frank Herbert's Children of Dune in 2003. Dune has also inspired some traditional games and a series of video games. Since 2009, the names of planets from the Dune novels have been adopted for the real-world nomenclature of plains and other features on Saturn's moon Titan.

Not on the boards I've been to. They'll often pretend to be unaffected by replies to their boards while secretly being on the verge of bursting in rage.
>if someone actually cites something on 4chan and i can pull it up on https://sci-hub.st/ , i'll read it.
You can, but there can be many papers with lots of domain-specific terminology and references to chains of papers from a narrow subset of a domain that you might not be familiar with. In addition, there is such a thing as pay-to-publish journals that can publish works that are written in an intentionally difficult to read style which can obfuscate their content, that would normally fail peer review (ever heard of the Sokal affair or the Bodganoff affair?)
From what you wrote, it doesn't seem like you disagree with this, so I'll leave this issue out.
Despite that, one must keep in mind that even pseudo-scientific works can contain grains of truth.
>if i think an argument is in bad faith, i comment once, and if they just reject that and continue in the same way i just don't respond. they win in their mind, no skin off my back.
The line between stating a controversial opinion and trolling can be difficult to draw in certain cases, since many people exaggerate their real views on a certain subject for the sake of having something to keep a debate going.
> 4chan it would just be "fuck off," kys, replying with a soijak and greentext without directly replying, etc.
That's not really any different from admitting defeat, and can instead make you look worse by coming off as assmad and unable to refute anything from what they stated. Posting a 'jak is functionally equivalent to saying "I do not like this".

cant understand why people liked dune so much. the characters were flat and devoid of anything interesting. the world is interesting and it was visually pretty good despite having the most boring and drab color palette ever but you didn't actually learn almost anything about the universe. it felt like the pilot of a tv show.

I still need to finish my hero academia as well. i keep falling into these traps were I really like the first season of Shonen were the protagonist is underpowered and they have to strategize and people die. But then as the show goes on it becomes more apparent who the main characters are that are never in any danger really and fighting devolves into a power flex. I really dislike it when stories move away from the early struggle.
