More than most characters Chen I think is probably the character most denatured by the fanbase.

Chen is not a kitten.
Chen is a nekomata.
Chen has long, sharp red nails on every finger.
Chen has a cunning streak visible in her large, lamp eyes that should be familiar to anyone who has lived with a cat.
She is nevertheless rather small.

Why'd they have to turn this awesome character into a lame little kitten?

It's pretty difficult to stand out as a badass when you live with Yukari and Ran.

Chen, if she wasn't trained by Ran, would be utterly horrifying. Anyone who has lived with a cat knows exactly what the cat would do if it was suddenly the stronger one in the relationship and could beat humans to take their stuff whenever it wants.
