Personally finding it really difficult to rate Monkeys. I enjoyed my time with it, but after every route I had the feeling that I just got filtered in understanding what the fuck happened and what the overall message was supposed to be. After reading Japanese reactions and seeing them struggle as well, I’m starting to think that Hato just fucked up this time. For every great moment ( like the scenes with insert songs in Garasu's and Mebachi's route, Yuki's first CG and the scenes before and after it, the theme park scene in Karasu's route etc.), there are at least 5 scenes were I'm just clueless about what Hato meant with them. It's not that bad if it's just a comedy scene, but it also applies to scenes that, at least on the surface, seem important to the message or overall arc of the routes.

Garasu:
Overall the worst route because the part after the first eroscene is just one big unmemorable haze to me. The Mebachi route does a better job at building Garasu's character since in Garasu’s route all memorable scenes are based on her Ojousama label instead of her character. I do like the resolution of her 'skimming hug' joke and the first arc of her route was fairly entertaining although not really original. The entire family part needed more explanation. It seems important to her character arc, but is just too vague and too much off a muddy mess with tacked on stuff like the lottery, the multiple family names and her aunt redeeming herself out of nowhere. This also ruined the speech scene in Karasu's route for me, since I’m completely clueless why she bothered revealing her other name there.

Yuki:
This route that felt the most consistent to me. The entire conclusion of the Muh Jibun arc was too rushed, but I can see where Hato was going with it, which is more I can say about the other routes.

Mebachi:
Biggest clusterfuck route of them all, but also the most entertaining because both arcs of the route (boyasawagi and muh Ai) have a great payoff. The scene with Garasu and Mebachi was the highlight of the game for me, even if it relies on a complete cop-out that doesn't even address the fact that Mebachi assaulted Saruyoshi with a knife. Not sure why they bothered with the Osananajimi part. the entire Ai part also was too confusing for my taste.

Karasu:
ADHD route. It's fine up until the battle scene but afterwards it's felt hard to get invested in the story when it jumps around so much. I have no idea when Saruyoshi & Karasu's meeting before the school from the common route and Saruyoshi & Karasu's meeting in the hospital, with Saruyoshi in bed, are supposed to mean or when they are supposed to take place. Also too much vague stuff in general like Mebachi and Guppy setting up camera’s and analysing the footage of the hospital. No idea what the fuck they were doing there. They don’t even use it to catch the monkey since Mebachi just finds Saruyoshi (who has no reason to even hide in the first place) in the bell.

It has the issue where the true route is fantastic and actually overrides the side routes, which barring Taku's are kinda boring (rei) or plain shit for horny masochistic fujos (Madarame), but their route sare basiclaly skippable as a whole.
Otherwise the character development is phenomenal for a couple of characters as far a sthe true end is concerned, ost is great, good atmosphere and aside from a couple of hiccups towards the end it tells a fulfilling story.

There are so many side heroines that aren't in the main squad and they all gain a decent chunk of lines so it feels like reading character stories in a mobage.

I still treat it as a nukige and I did like some of the sex scenes (it's like 1/3 non-MC and 2/3 MC) so I would probably rate it better than you do.

Thinking about it some more, VN music tends to be in genres I actually like and that doesn't necessarily apply to other things. Classical/pseudo-classical stuff is common. For battle scenes, metal is pretty common. Obligatory "happy/up-beat" songs are in some musically busy style (like jazz or whatever) that pleasing to the ears. Usually, VNs don't use garbage like hip hop or EDM which pops in anime occasionally.

The older you get, the more you've seen, and the more important is writing for you. Writing is what sells the story and/or characters. I've seen enough stories, where the basis of the main story/drama was already so shaky, it was basically over before it started.
The sad part is, that those problems could usually be easily solved. A different game by the writer, Istoria, was like that. A few minor changes here and there and it would've been okay. But the way it was, it just felt like a gigantic ass pull that set everything into motion.
