I suppose this might be off-topic, but do any of you watch tokusatsu as well? I know it doesn’t really make sense to compare them with most J-dramas and film’s domestically but I’m curious to know if there’s an overlap between overseas audiences of the two, since I assume most of you aren’t Japanese nationals (perhaps I’m wrong)

I'm glad you've been enjoying. I've watched that series about 5 times now, twice alone and the rest with different friends. It's such a great show!

In the other show I recommended, Hiyokko, the main character is the same actor playing the "young" Hanako from Amachan. She's so beautiful and lovable, so it makes yet another great NHK Asadora more enjoyable to watch.

The only good GTO is the 1998 version. If you still haven't gotten enough, the 1999 movie is decent. The 2012 series is unwatchable imo.

I tried watching with a couple of friends and they all dropped it as soon as that rape scene happened with the pimp. I don't know what it is about it, but the movie always draws me back in somehow. Sion Sono is really good at pulling at our subconscious strings which harbor fucked up thoughts, feelings and curiosities.

Well, it's more the fact that I'm a Sono SIon junkie so I re-watch his movies a lot.
Guilty of Romance has astonished me when I watched it for the first time and from time to time I remember some of its horrifying parts and think about the genius that is Sono's creative brain.
If you haven't watched it yet, ANTIPORN is a thematic sequel to Guilty of Romance.

I watched Antiporno before Guilty of Romance, and I get similar vibes, except Guilty of Romance feels a lot more real and reaches deeper into my feelings, giving me that "weird" Sion Sono vibe I can't get enough of.

Did you know that the female lead of Guilty of Romance is actually Sion Sono's real wife? Knowing that from the second watch onward generates a lot more thoughts for me, such as whether he was punishing her, trying to teach her a lesson, or something else.

I know of course. I was surprised 10 years ago when I heard he married the actress from his Cold Fish. I love how he used her a lot in his movies and dramas and how she improved a lot as an actress. Although she hasn't appeared in any of his works since Tokyo Vampire Hotel, I wonder why.
