Goddamn, shit went from 0 to 1000 really fast in the last day, never expected Akiha dying but I think what shocked me the most was the twist at the end with Kohaku explaining how she essentially got Epstein'd by Makihisa and planned to kill the Tohnos then killed herself.
I cannot say it wasn't foreshadowed with "Hisui" making a weird creepy face whenever Shiki took the meds.
Also this makes Shiki choke-raping Kohaku all the more fucked up in retrospective as that makes it so EVERYONE in the family abused her body in some capacity, on top of that being done by the person she expected to be "saved" by.

There is also FMDM, which was at 2009, which is pretty close to 2012.
I do actually have very little idea about it so please explain. But from what I can see, a lot goes down to marketing. TsukiRe was very hyped in Japan, and people here love it above anything else. There very copies for reservation in all big shops, and probably a huge chunk of copies were sold even before the sales had started. If the marketing wasn't good, the sales would be very bad as well.
Also, although the music was very good, not having VA in 2012 is kinda sad and might have had a big impact on Mahoyo desu. Even Fate has probably been voiced by the time

Why that is is a complex topic, but saturation and the big established franchises kinda stopped incentive in new stuff, and many companies died.
Mahoyo was priced quite high, and the various false starts meant marketing was rather poor.
No voices did hurt sales to a small degree, but Nasu was right.
After all, Mahoyo was made to fulfill Nasu's desire, not commercial success.
He said this many times, why it was voiceless, and why it had no routes.
It was 1st in box sales in 2012, and in general top 10 on every digital platform, behind only eroges.
2009 had FMDM, S;G and Majikoi, probably the last huge year.
2012 had Mahoyo, Fata Morgana among others.

I found pretty much all of Shiki's mental breakdowns to be much more unsettling and creepy. All the flashback stuff with Ciel and Noel was considerably enhanced and more appropriately horror-focused. If we are talking about bad ends, I found the remake trumped the original pretty easily. The difference is in how much detail its described in and how much attention it's been given. In films, you can have a character blink and wipe out an entire race of people. Maybe show the classic scene of a burning village, just to let audiences know this person is evil. That's all you need for most people to find a character completely despicable.
Nasu is a different case, he puts exceptional amounts of effort into letting you know just how much someone is breaking physically and/or mentally. He can use that to his advantage for things like the already mentioned Heaven's Feel route where Shirou's mind is shattering and erasing its self over the course of the story. And in Tsukihime, much attention is brought to the pain characters are put through. Ciel is stabbed several times and writhing in so much pain that she tears her own fingernails out, and according to Roa also spazzes out like a chicken after she's even beheaded. I'm not sure... I think it depends from person to person. Shirou can still be a self-insert to be honest, since you can project yourself as him like Nasu said. Of course Shirou has a character, but that doesn't mean people can't self-insert, he's just better than the average self-insert character.
