It's not that I don't feel good about myself.
I always remain a step back to help others, but it almost never has a positive impact on me.
When I do nothing, all is well. When I move, many become anxious.

It depends on what/who is the 'others'.
Friends or family could back you up later if you ever need assistance yourself. But that's just a more calculating way to look at it.
In today's world, you can find inumerous reasons or reactions to what you do, but what truly matters is what happens around you, to the things/people you care, and specially you.
So if you want to know what you gain from helping others, think how it will affect you or the things you care in a positive or negative way.
