I taught myself french by just watching shit with accurate French subtitles and learning a couple of fundamental grammar rules. French isn't phonetic like Spanish, but it consistently unphonetic. The important part is that obviously since it uses the Latin alphabet, it's simple enough to type words into google translate, which means you can focus purely on listening without having to learn spelling until later.

Romanji sub would be fantastic as it would make it much faster to just learn to understand spoken Japanese (and even speak it), and worry about learning reading after that.

i think for people that really want to learn, they just feel a certain need to without having a reason in the first place
surely you could say i wanted to start learning so i can play game in japanese and watch anime in japanese
but almost all of the good stuff will be translated anyway, so obviously there is a deeper reason to why i feel so compelled to learn the damn language
and perhaps it's because you can say i just love japan
more recently i found it's particularly useful for me so that i may understand japanese insights on art and drawing after i picked up saitou naoki's book, something that may never get translated

I think I have a fundamental issue with Anki where when I read something and come to an unknown word I'm too quick to be like "yeh gonna learn that in anki don't worry" when I add it to Anki from Yomichan for later, so I don't really study the kanji or reading properly like I would if there was no Anki. When I eventually get round to the card in Anki, find a sentence and learn the word it's now just an isolated Anki card.
