Any day, he could wake up and simply say "I am going to make a lot of money off of Touhou."

He'd license the property to a major animation studio and he'd immediately be rolling in the dough.

He could do this *whenever he wants*. He literally has millions of dollars at his fingertips.

But he doesn't, because he's ZUN, and he values his awesome hat more than money.

He makes enough money for booze. The booze gives him the motivation and inspiration for more Touhou games. He's living the dream.

Truth. Touhou would be nothing without the legions and legions of fans producing work for their stuff and fans themselves also need to eat.

Touhou is sort of like the Linux of anime/game/moe girl works, they are whoever you want them to be and (aside from a few generally fan accepted standards) can be put into almost every situation in a plausible manner.

It's not really about the laws. If ZUN really wanted to, he could clamp down on Touhou and stop people from making derivative works. The thing is that they're not psychotically possessive and greedy about this kind of thing in Japan, and it's allowed, or even encouraged.

After all, if someone can feed and support themselves making derivatives of your work, and it doesnt take any money from your work (they're still buying touhou games, they're not stopping due to doujins) then all that does is help everybody.
