This thread is for the discussion of untranslated Japanese visual novels.

What are you playing? What are you looking forward to? What have you finished? You know the drill.

Out of curiosity, I went to search for what else Qruppo made, and just discovered they are the doujin group that made Boku wa Tomodachi ~I am not sweetheart.~
This makes so much sense now, no wonder they had the balls to pull these games off, it's on their DNA.

My mind if fuzzy on the details, but it's obviously rougher around the edges than nukitashi.
Even so, you can see the classic Qruppo subversion/embrace of its themes.
And the theme in this one is, well, VNs. Except the MC is not the protagonist.

I've finished the normal route and Minami's route so far. Despite being a game with some pretty heavy themes, neither of the endings I've unlocked have resonated with me that much. The writer does a good job of making you care about the characters, but by the end of each route it doesn't even feel like a big deal that the world is about to end .
Gonna get all of the endings because apparently there's some sort of epilogue that gets unlocked at the end, but the only other route that really interests me is Aoba's.
Tentatively: Aoba > Umi > Minami > Asahi > Yuuhi

>> No.36907660

>>36907502
It's definitely above average. No voice acting, Chuuni-ness in key action scenes, vague descriptions of magic stuff and foreshadowing that doesn't get resolved don't help the readability either. The prose itself also reads more like a 'real' novel so there are some writing structures that you normally don't see in your dialogue > 2-3 lines of exposition > dialogue VN.

I'll be honest
I love KKK's format, you've got a single story being told from multiple perspectives - nothing is filler, every encounter and fight matters
One thing I absolutely hated about Dies Irae was how the first two routes were essentially set ups, the eroge structure of heroine routes is really restrictive at times especially in the case of chuunishit like light.

If any of you is bored out of your mind you can keep reading and take a look at this Magpie eroge scaling model comparison:
Use 1-9, 0, q, w keys to navigate. https://slow.pics/c/x8T9qaTX
Results usually vary on artstyle and scaling amount (here its 600p->900p/1080p) so don't get attached to your pick.

>Lunch scene:
1 (lanczos) and w (amd fsr) are immediately out for not being good enough comperatively.
8, 9, 0 (all ACNet) butchers the background details too much for my taste.
2 (Ravu) looks too blurry.
>Citrus Girls scene:
q (Anime4K) has too many artifacts around the girls chins.
I like my girls with rosy cheeks so 5, 7 are out.
3, 4, 6 are left. 3 has an advantage as their cheeks look cuter.
>Unusual Pupils scene:
Here again 8, 9, 0 (all ACNet) butchered the details on the pupils. Other than that most of them look usable. 1, 2, w are still blurry.

Personal verdict: 3 or 6. I think I'll go with 3 this time.

His complex treatment of themes, and his deep understanding of human condition is unparalleled and unprecedented. He's a dreamer, teacher and a writer at the same time. The best thing about sakuuta is naoya is literally Sca-di. Sca-di knows what art truly means, and his uncompromising vision to elevate VNs to the level of art is perfectly executed in SakuUta/SubaHibi. You really need to give up being a human if you don't like his works/think they are just lowbrow porn. I think it's easy to sit back and call things trivial while not understanding them yourself. There's a pattern I've seen my whole life where I or someone else have a revelation, and other people pretend they already knew it and that it was obvious and anyone who didn't know it already was basically ignorant and stupid, even when they themselves didn't understand it. Human beings aren't born with universal knowledge of life, we're born as mostly blank slates and we have to crawl our way up from the mud. There are deep truths about lives that many can go their whole lives without realizing, even when they seem so obvious when stated and presented. For this reason it's all a matter of having a humble mindset. If you recognize like Socrates that you know nothing, you can be better equipped to appreciate the wisdom presented to you. If you're an arrogant idiot on 4chan that doesn't realize how little you know, you can just mock wisdom presented to you as stuff everyone should know, while not actually learning or understanding anything yourself.
Ima didn't change my world view, it just gave me language to express some things, and some insights into how human behavior. My world view is largely the same. And of course I am no strangers to books. Ima reminds me the most of Dostoevsky's writings. As always I must question why supposed VN fans hate them so much and consider them inferior to books. Then again, I feel like in this electronic society, people kind of opt to thinking of books as some kind of status symbol since they themselves have abandoned books and only view them as like peak intellectualism that's above everything else. If you actually read books you'll find they're nothing so transcendental. (Philosophical treatises aside. I'm thinking about fiction here. >And this – to me – is the finest trick. Which is much higher than the mere statement of “Live Happily” – which some people may choose to read as ‘finding happiness in the calmness of daily life despite all of its troubles – and not seeking for any kind of metaphysical reprieve in an afterlife – since death does not exist”.

>A problem with this interpretation is that it does not exactly fit SubaHibi – whose artifices and reliance on Slice of Life tropes are quite distant from any semblance to real life, while its most directly truthful moments comes from some of its most painful moments of suffering. To be honest, that kind of moral would fit something like a Yasujiro Ozu film, or a Hirokazu Koreeda film, or Yoji Yamamoto’s The Twilight Samurai better – or even the Up Documentaries. Mihaly Csikszenthmihalyi’s Optimal Experience is a better text at teaching the secret to appreciating daily life.

>The trick is this – SubaHibi has convinced you to live in happiness in your own realistic daily life (if you are open to the message that is) – whilst the entire story is made up of the highest level of artifice – and it directly throws this fact in your face with the very first epigraph. In other words, it is a story about the triumph of Fiction over life, underscoring life, and making life all the more vibrant because of it. The moral of the story is not just “Live Happily” but “Live Happy Fantasies” – the failure of happiness for some of the characters in the work is not due to being delusional, but due to having the wrong delusions.

Absolutely but it's not just them. Last month I forced myself through Nier Automata hating that game from start to finish but I wanted to finish it (yes all 5 main endings and joke endings) to understand why it's such an acclaimed game. I didn't find it. People always praise the "deep philosophy" and "amazing story" in it but there's barely anything at all.
Like you said it reminds me of literature class when you read a book and there's a reference to some obscure philosopher who only you read about and you smirk thinking you're so intellectual and educated, when in truth it was just a throwaway mention that has no grander meaning.

This same thinking clouds scenarioge readers. There can be some deeper themes going on but most of the time it's very simplified and most of the used concepts are regurgitated by every writer. It's ironic that every time a JOP scenarioge gets translated the small masses of EOPs say the very same thing "That's it? That's your kamige?" That doesn't mean those games are bad, but they're always hyped to the max and build up expectations that for most fall flat because it's only good. That's likely what happened to me with Nier Automata, me expecting some grand story with deep writing and characters when it just wasn't.
Regarding VNs I have to agree with that anon who said you read them based on aesthetics and "oh god this girl is moe and I wanna ichacha" etc. For philosophy pick up nonfiction books or classical literature.
In the end what really matters is enjoyment. Read moege, read scenarioge, read nukige.

Man that Habaki vs Yatou fight I just finished reading in KKK might be one of the weirdest ones I've ever read. If you jack it to subversion, I guess you'll get a kick out of this. Basically all the protagonist think this is the final fight and exactly act like it on a narrative and meta level. There's a shitload of cliched "俺は負けない" lines, the fucking power of friendship and love, and all that typical stuff. The music is blaring heroic, happy sounding stuff as well. As a reader you obviously know this is all bullshit so the contrast is odd. To add some icing on it, there's actually an extended part with Yatou's own perspective. He's not some evil dude (clearly) but just wants to see if the protagonists have what it takes to stop 波旬. Basically he just LARPs as an evil antagonist the whole time and gives up his role after he gets defeated. It was just tonally really weird.

Even Habaki saw past Yatou's shitty acting. But yeah, Habaki vs Yatou was probably one of my favourite fights in the series. There's really a ton of emotion attached to it when you've played Dies Irae - hell that goes for the entirety of the Yatsukahagi and a lot of the big moments in the game i.e Ryuumei and Momiji
. Overall, I think KKK was a lot stronger in regards to emotional impact compared to Dies Irae, but that's also entirely contingent on you having played Dies Irae.

The next heroine I didn't care about much but was also a 9/10 route. Then came a 8/10 route. So starting with the wrong route could've made someone drop the game.

>Abrahadabra is a word that first publicly appeared in The Book of the Law (1904), the central sacred text of Thelema. Its author, Aleister Crowley, described it as "the Word of the Aeon, which signifieth The Great Work accomplished."[1] This is in reference to his belief that the writing of Liber Legis (another name for "The Book of the Law") heralded a new Aeon for mankind that was ruled by the god Ra-Hoor-Khuit (a form of Horus). Abrahadabra is, therefore, the "magical formula" of this new age. It is not to be confused with the Word of the Law of the Aeon, which is Thelema, meaning "Will".

I use an html page with a modified version of "clipboard inserter" (I don't actually use the clipboard because it's slow and inconvenient). The html page has a script to do some basic conversions to get the ruby text working.

can you give the link for the page?
i was using the anacreon texthooker page but it starts to lag after some amount of characters so have to clean up it all the time

No, sorry. There's not really anything special about my html page. It's not full of bloated crap though. Just the ordinary blank html page with jquery removed and a script added.
The not-clipboard inserter addon is special but it's unsigned and has a native host and needs a special hook to use, so it's very impractical to share all three parts and teach someone how to use them.

Oh, we are talking about our setup?
I have a bash script that copies the contents of the clipboard to a local file each time it seems a change, then display the result using a simple html python server and a simplified custom load function to make it lightweight as it can be.
That way, I can use your favorite browser extension to check for kanji I'm not familiar with on the fly, and since it uses the clipboard, it can be used in a lot more stuff than just text hookers.
It wouldn't be too difficult to make it log what it is receiving either.

The clipboard is not fast and lightweight.
Your wording "each time it seems a change" implies you are polling the clipboard and then comparing its content to the last content. This is slower and can miss updates compared to setting a clipboard watcher or notification based system.

Clipboard can't catch lines fast enough.

That's right, the clipboard isn't a very good solution for extracting a game's script.
But I don't need some amazing speed, clipnotify is enough for my needs because I don't actually need that much speed.
And in nukitashi's case, I can just directly extract the actual internal game script and use regex to clean it up if I ever needed to.

Me?
I made a scuffed fullscreen overlay setup that is hidden by default.
I just hover it if I want to look something up and then it automatically goes away with the next line.

I'm trying to get into programming, but i just use already existing tools, no reason to invent something on my own for texthooking/lookups.
Would be great to learn c++ and fix chiitrans tho.

How "difficult" is Omega no Shikai? It seems like one of those games that's nearly impossible to translate but that might not be so bad in terms of reading. I would like to hear some thoughts if people here have played it.

Pin-point games are a huge guilty pleasure of mine. Every now and then I download one of them, jerk off three times in a row and then uninstall it out of shame. They're so degenerate it feels like my soul is being judged after I finish them.

The only reason I write my on hooking software is because the existing stuff sucks. Existing software can't perfectly grab everything with furigana intact even when skipping

To be fair, each VN engine can have its own system. I run into this sometimes when using Textractor to copy lines to the clipboard, so my stupid, bad Japanese idiot brain can look up the kanji that I still don't know. Recently, I read Nukitashi, and it implemented the furigana with an escape code, something like \tふりがな\r in the output. In other VNs, I don't see it at all in the hooked text. I can't really blame a general purpose text hooker for not knowing every single weird-ass way to print furigana.

True, i guess. Personally i want to make a python script to fill nazeka name dictionary from vndb character page as my first python """"project"""". Maybe this way i can get into coding and pick up other languages later.
Also it would be great to make built-in texthooker for unity eroge by fixing dll, but gotta learn c# for this.

I didn't fully go into all the problems with textractor, but I'm not referring to the furigana as a textractor problem specifically.
Lack of support for std::string (mentioned above). Poor interface, poor performance, bad plugin interface and scriptability.
There are a lot of times that I make a hook that simply isn't possible to write with textractor.

Textractor's nukitashi hook is poor because it's a read code. I have a better hook that is mostly compatible with textractor, but it has different threads for the names, and different threads for when the text goes bold, load screen, etc.

>> No.36952406

>>36952320

With nukitashi specifically, textractor will hook into some windows api that causes the loading screen to lag. You can remove this hook, but there's no way to black list it. You've got to manually remove it every time you start the game.
