Oh no. Oh fuck. What can I do? I removed the wig cap to realign one of her eyes and when i tried to push it back in her neck snapped. What can I do to fix this? Is it possible to order a replacement piece? How would I go about, well, replacing it? The part on the neck seems pretty complex.

She's an Azone doll. Body is OB24 I believe? Or at least those are the clothes that fit her best.

>> No.36675496

>>36673715
I can’t give advice on how to fix her but luckily the obitsu body should be easy to find, I think hobby search has them in stock. I’ve been collecting dolls for 17 years and have over 100 Azone and obitsus and I’ve never broken one, they might feel solid and sturdy for the most part but I recommend a gentle touch when it comes to them. Sorry your girl broke anon hopefully she’ll be back in one piece soon.

I have several ways to make it loose - assuming the peg can be removed at all and it isn't just part of a larger piece. The more I look at it the more likely it seems to be.

Next time I'll try not to stress myself out so much. I had spent all morning trying on cheap clothes I bought months ago and I only moved the eyes (by accident) because I needed to remove the wig cap to fit an awful sailor uniform. I just wanted to be done and I noticed the misaligned eyes whenI thought I already was, so I probably wasn't as careful as I needed (too focused on not touching the eyes or applying pressure around them).

Anon with the broken doll again. Sorry to be a bother.
I looked around and found out and can confirm my doll's body type and that the broken neck peg is easily removable. Problem is that being Obitsu 24cm almost all search results are for Blythe and when I tried my luck on Parabox I was welcomed by this information
>The manufacturer does not sell a neck piece by itself, so Parabox will not be any help if breakage happens!
Since there are no official replacements and English isn't giving me anything after removing blythe from the search, should I be trying my luck with Japanese? something like オビツ24 首
Otherwise I'll have to cement my broken piece back together I guess (thank you >>36687054 anon).

And going on a tangent, when searching for information, I noticed that my doll's name is used for dolls with very different wigs, clothes and makeup. How common is that? Do they do that because they all share the same category of components (and designer) even if the specifics are different?

>> No.36707307

Pretty sure its been several years since Obitsu sold individual parts for 1:6 dolls so finding anything new is unlikely. Not that I'd trust the quality of plastic thats been sitting around unopened for that amount of time.

>> No.36708815

>>36707307
Oh, it's 1/6 so no worries about that. Actually this specific doll came out just last month.
But since Obitsu doesn't supply spares, then my options are very limited and I's probably have to rely on reproductions or 3D printed. I imagine Japanese sites are my best option but I don't know where to start

But there wouldn't BE middlemen if they would just sell the dolls correctly to customers. If I could order a male dd or a tan mdd on either of the volks websites I'd go do that, but they literally do not give that option. If they have a problem with the middlemen facilitating proxy orders, the easiest way to fix the problem is to simply... sell them themselves. Again, this is a problem they caused and have the power to remediate at any time.

Also Danny actually does allow certain authorized dealers to buy and sell Smart Dolls, like Fabric & Friends.

Anon with the broken doll here.
I bought some plastic cement (Revell Contacta 39604) and I can't get this to work.
I'm not very smart as it's already obvious so I didn't anticipate how slippery the surfaces would become which coupled with small pieces and big fingers it's... no good.
After some failed attempts, making sure to quickly wipe the surfaces after every failure, I tried using some blu-tack to hold pieces in place which had some moderate success (as said I'm not very smart, so at first I tried doing so vertically instead of like pic related).

Since I couldn't keep it pressed for a long time I tried using some contact glue (the polimerizing kind that has you mix a resin with a hardener), which in retrospect was a very bad idea, and let it dry for 24 hours. Obviously it didn't work.
I tried cleaning the pieces with some rubbing alcohol and use the plastic cement again. Thanks to the blu-tack I could manage to keep it pressed with my own fingers for 15 minutes straight... and it didn't work.

So I'm kind of stuck. Maybe there are too many layers of glue in there? Maybe I've damaged the piece beyond repair? Or maybe that was the wrong glue and I should have just ordered Tamiya (even if it was more expensive and took logner)?
I also bought some clamps which did me no good (I think the caliper would do a better job).
The buyfag guide also links to a nendo joint repair guide, but I don't have half the tools and I don't trust my clumsy hands with pulling that off on a joint that is one whole milimeter thinner than nendo joints.

>>36714529
Sorry I took a couple days longer. Here are all of the joint's measurements. I forgot to add the 1.5mm wide screwhole on top of the thicker part (I). I also forgot to take a photo and measurements of the conical piece that goes inside the head and the screw that attaches it to the joint. If it's of any use, the head's official designation is OBT MM-01.
Maybe I could do with something like https://www.amazon.co.jp/-/en/dp/B07Q5R9Y32/ or https://www.amazon.co.jp/dp/B01N6BJC46/
but with no screw holes I don't know how to go about anchoring it to the head.

This is stressful but at least it's been a learning experience. Next time I'll make sure to learn how all of a doll's joints work exactly before posing.

That is an excellent mock-up. I couldn't have asked for better. Perhaps the joint is made of POM? I know for Megami Device kits they've gone to swapping all ABS joints with POM. That might make it impervious to traditional cementing methods. Its chemical resistance is doubly impressive, if that's what it actually is. Your only real choice is flame treating it as a high-stress part where CA glue won't suffice. For CA glue, an accelerator is an absolute must for these finicky parts. But CA glue isn't exactly known for its torture resistance. For those options parts you linked, a pen vise to bore through and threaded inserts to set a screw?

I will see about modeling a replacement.

Yea that's why it doesn't work. Solvent types of cements, like the Tamiya extra thin i think you're looking, is the kind you need. You need very little of it in either part and it generally bonds in a minute if that (cure time is a bit longer, I just left my Doll alone for a day after).

Honestly I don't know about materials, all I've seen about Obitsu bodies is that they're made of ABS and soft vinyl. As for the replacement parts, I'll look into those inserts. Although looking at comments, someone used one of the black 360º parts and just (permanently?) attached the top part to the anchoring piece (with glue or putty I assume). My doll actually came with a replacement for that anchor piece so there's that.
Thank you for your help and efforts.

I'm going to guess that the other botched repair attempts covered the plastic to the point where Tamiya stuff couldnt bond the surfaces, or it doesnt work at all with ABS. Probably both.

>> No.36880771

>>36880426
Yeah, must be something like that. I tried to softly scratch off whatever was left on the surface but the glue had no effect whatsoever. Not even a little bit of stickiness, as if I had just used water.

>> No.36881498

>>36880426
It does work with ABS, I've already repaired ABS parts and panels with Tamiya's thin cement. Alcohol don't work that well to remove adhesives, and acetone will damage ABS, so try to use lighter gas or coleman fuel to remove the previous layer of glue, gas doesn't attack ABS and work great against all kind of adhesives.

>> No.36882130

>>36881498
I should add, for my first botched attempts I used the revell glue, which smells identical to the tamiya cement and both of them claim ti have n-butylaldehyde (too bad neither of them has a full ingredient list).
Lighter gas huh... time to learn how to empty those old things I have around.

>> No.36882879

>>36882130
Not all plastic cements are the same. I've never used Revell, but I do use Humbrol's regular plastic cement along with Tamiya's thin cement. As for your repair, normally you should see the plastic melt a bit soon after applying the glue on the brocken parts and when pressing them together. If it doesn't, that means the cement isn't doing shit.
Also, while Tamiya's thin cement does work with ABS in my experience, if you bought that cement specificially for ABS then you should have tried getting their ABS cement instead.

It ocurred to me to test whether this glue works at all before cleaning any surfaces: the piece has a burr so I slathered it on the Tamiya cement, pressed it with my nails as hard as I could and it didn't deform at all. Slathered it again, pressed it against another piece of ABS and, well, no effect.
I'd try with superglue before considering buying a third kind of glue but I'm certain that will break off again after a while.

I recently found a doll outfit of my waifu on YJA and it sparked an interest in getting a doll. I've tried to do research and read guides including the one in this thread, and I can tell it's not a hobby to be entered into lightly, even if I only want one single doll. I think I know what I would need to start (body, head, wig, eyes, tools), but I'm just sitting on the fence right now before I fully commit to taking the plunge. Especially since, even if I spread out my purchases, the initial investment is relatively high.

I've read through the guides, but there's a few things I'm still trying to figure out before I buy my first doll:
1. I've heard about the staining issue with vinyl dolls. Are there any clothes that are safe to leave the doll in? Do I need to get a bodysuit?
2. I saw a mention of the Volks USA shop possibly having a problem with restocking. How true is that? If I see something I want there, do I need to move on it quickly?

>> No.36929449

>>36928867
White clothes, light colored clothes and clothes with liners are all safe to leave on your doll for extended periods of time. If you want them to wear anything dark or very vibrant colors then body stockings are needed. The Volks ones are great if you're using a full body dress, but if you want different shaped ones, you can get them cheap from coolcat to keep legs and arms exposed.
All Volks clothes are limited and reruns are almost never done regardless if it's the international or USA shop. If you see something you like it's best to move on it quickly, or jump in lotteries for new collections. For missed or older sets check Mandarake.co.jp

Out of the two, which would you recommend, a DD or DDS? I like the size and general look of the DDS more, but I know that basically everything is tailored to the DD body and will be a bit looser on the DDS body. I try to avoid owning dolls with unusual/in-between measurements because I hate dealing with awkward clothing fit and just want outfits that will look nice on them straight out of the box. Should I go for a regular DD, or does the DDS still look cute in DD clothes despite the slightly smaller size?

Only a few times I've had to pin back clothes around their waists and that was only because the size was supposed to run all the way across four different doll sizes and busts. I'll also say from what I've seen anything "designed for Smartdoll" has a better fit on a DDS than on a DD.

Yeah, the torso/waist area is mainly why I prefer the look of the DDS body too. It sounds like the shorter leg length won't bother me, I can deal with slightly longer pant/skirt hems as long as the fit is still generally good.

It's relieving to hear that you haven't had any problems with too baggy clothes. And interesting that Smart Doll clothes fit better on them... but it seems like SmD clothing isn't hard to find, so I won't complain about having more options.
Thanks to both of you who responded and eased my fears about the DDS body. Looks like I know what to save up for now!

DDS and DD are basically the same size, get the one you prefer! With the exception of things for DDdy/Large busts, it should fit just fine!

On types of dolls, I assume most if not all dolls I see here and on twitter are MDD. But what has me intrigued is what's with the bratty-style faces? I love them but they look nothing like the "normal" DD faces. Is it some specific line that purposedly goes for that style or am I outright wrong about the MDD thing?

They're customized, artists mod the base heads Volks sells.

I get that's how it usually goes. But even as the most basic goes (face shape, features, eye size) they resemble each other way more than they'd resemble >>37025706

So, I think I get what you're trying to ask. There are currently about 24 different "Standard" blank heads that Volks sells. Any head will fit on any size doll, but some of them are very much geared towards the MDD 1/4 size dolls. They tend to look less "mature" and have larger eye sockets. The DDH01, DDH10 and the new DDH22 are the most popular heads with a LOT of MDD owners. All three are similarly shaped and have similar features and are super customizable. There's a high chance that when you see a bratty MDD it's going to be one of those three heads.

Oh, maybe because they're usually DDH-01? Like the other anon said 10 and 22 are also popular with MDD owners but I feel the DDH-01 is the most common out of the three when it comes to these types of artist heads.

Yeah, DDH-01 and DDH-22 Seem to be the key. On hindsight it was silly of me to expect Volks to only make one style of head despite all evidence to the contrary.

Have any of you guys placed orders with Alice lately? I ordered a stand a while ago and it shipped out, but I'm concerned it got lost. The last shipping update was that it left shanghai processing center and is heading to shanghai international mail exchange, but that was on October 1st and it hasn't updated. Alice's customer service said to be patient as it can take more than 2 months to arrive due to the pandemic but 3 weeks to go between two places in Shanghai seems like a long time. Should I be worried?
