to me くれる is behaving differently, unless somehow the hidden が in the first is also 僕(which im not sure is possible). there's something in the first sentence thats not entirely clicking

First, nothing before a は interacts with anything else.
(On the subject of my dad) I received a watch. That's the first sentence.
For the second sentence, くれる is not just receiving items. Someone doing something for you counts too. So if someone fucks you, waits for you whatever, they くれる'd.

Think about it this way: since japanese often has no actors or context in sentences themselves, one has to be able to infer what is happening and in what direction somehow.
あげる、くれる are how you determine that.
Things usually always begave the same in japanese, if something behaves differently it means you are thinking about it the wrong way. I hope that helps.

here くれる doesn't mean "give" in the same way as it does in the first sentence. when used as an auxilary verb/helping verb, it has the nuance of the subject doing something *for the sake of someone else*. so, 明日は待たさないでくれよ uses the imperative/command form of くれる, so the speaker is saying something like "(for my sake) don't wait tomorrow".

you'll really only understand it once you see it a bunch of times though. try not to think about it too much.

I'm working on a new Japanese guide that will be much better than the guides by matt, shoui, tatsumoto, katsumoto, and qm. The guide will be available for free but there will be a Patreon link somewhere on the website if anyone wants to leave a tip. There will be a video version posted to YouTube as well but it will be the only video on that channel to avoid creating another Matt situation.

So far it is coming along great. It covers a lot of important stuff that isn't mentioned in those other guides and it manages to be both in depth and concise at the same time due to being well organized. I'll keep you guys updated.
