"thy" does not mean "your".
"thy" is more like 「その」, referring to something you use a　が particle with.

Because of french influence. In french (and many other languages) it's impolite to address older people or people with higher social status with singular pronoun. In english it first became impolite to address royalty or aristocrats with thee or thou. Then anyone with higher social status. Then anyone at all.

AFAIK there has never been neutral 3rd person pronoun other than "it" in english. I'm not sure if it's ever been common to address people with "it" though

Not only higher status. le vouvoiement is the standard way of speaking with someone you don't know. German also have a polite form, that is grammatically the same as the plural 3rd form. It's more like it's odd english didn't keep the polite form

Probably because unlike other languagues, english got rid of the singular form which constitutes the impolite form in other languages, making it so the polite form is the only way to refer to somebody, hence making this form lose all semblance of politeness.

The word "he" is generally accepted (at least in textbooks and dictionaries) as being gender neutral, at least in default. But that's long since been lost on the general population. I had a friend say "ze" for gender-neutral pronouns. But I have since discovered a superior usage of that.

More commonly, I hear people say "They" instead of he or she even when they know it's one person in order to avoid getting the gender wrong.
