This isn't really something the government cares about, which is why he only got 14 days (which most likely means zero days due to time already served). It's the fault of the people at Future Shop who reported it, since if someone brings something involving child porn to the police they HAVE to deal with it even if they don't think it's actually a problem, and the courts can't just wave it away if they don't want to get major flak from certain parts of the populace.

It's kind of a slippery slope, because there's already a major problem with women not reporting rapes and with rape charges not resulting in convictions. On April 10, 2000, a Swiss court sentenced 79-year-old publicist and retired teacher Gaston-Armand Amaudruz to one year in prison for "denying" the existence of homicidal gas chambers in World War II German concentration camps.

Amaudruz was found guilty of violating Switzerland's five-year-old "anti-racism" law, which makes it a crime to "deny, grossly minimize or seek to justify genocide or other crimes against humanity." He had broken the law, the court ruled, through his distribution of revisionist books, and for two articles in 1995 issues of his newsletter Courrier du Continent. In one of the offending items he had written: "For my part, I maintain my position: I don't believe in the gas chambers. Let the exterminationists provide the proof and I will believe it. But as I've been waiting for this proof for decades, I don't believe I will see it soon."

It is a problem because rapes are very hard to prove in court, and it almost always comes down to the woman's word against the man's, not to mention that in a lot of places the men are given an easy time by local judges. It's great that innocent men aren't getting convicted, but neither are the guilty ones - which in turn means that women are less likely to come forward because they don't want to go through the trauma of bringing it to court if the odds of a conviction are low anyway.

That's assuming he stll has enough money for it. After paying court costs, most people in that position don't generally think, "Well, time to up and start a new life in Uzbekistan!" They, instead, try to pick up the pieces of their broken life, and if they do move, it's to move to a different city/town where no one will point at him in the streets and whisper, "Look! The pedophile!"

By the time he sells his car, his house, and most of his belongings in order to afford food to eat, he'll probably start thinking about leaving the country (that is, probably around 10months in), but by that time he won't be able to afford the costs to move. That leaves either trying to sneak onboard an airplane(can people still do this?), or just robbing a store for a knife to slit your throat.

Much better, thanks.

This sort of thing is pretty harmful for both men and women. It's true that there are false rape accusations and that they are a major problem for the men involved, but at the same time the backlash against these is such that woman become less likely to report real events for fear of being branded false accusers when they inevitably lose the case.

No one really agrees on the numbers of false accusations; the lowest any study put it at was just 1% or 2% while the highest is a little under 50%. Given that the conviction rate is something like 5%, there's still a major discrepancy between the amount of convictions for real rapes compared to those of other crimes.

Only porn that Finland forbids outright is bestiality and child pornography. The status of violent porn videos is somewhat unclear. The film board refuses to rate them which means they can't be sold or rented in Finland. I think private possession is ok as long as you don't distribute. Videos of real rapes (and other violent crimes) are forbidden, due to dignity/privacy of victims. You're also forbidden from selling/showing stuff to people who are younger than the age rating for that material, which tangentially covers porn too as it's 18+.

Television channels are exempt from age ratings and only have to take care they show programs at appropriate times. In other words late night porn on national public channels is in theory ok, but apart from a few years of soft-core porn on a commercial channel in the 90s it's rare.

Distributing porn mags to minors is apparently ok, since it's not moving pictures (my lawyer dad offered to buy me mags when I was 14). Though you could still be done in for "grooming". Likewise it's forbidden to entice minors to undress in from of a webcam or use the internet to lure them into having sex.

There are some other little statutes here and there but for now at least Finland has very liberal laws. Some years ago some attention-whore psychologist got in a tizzy about fanservice in the Dragon Balls manga (of all things!). At first fans thought this was just something the tabloids were blowing out of proportion but then suddenly some clueless feminists started a debate in parliament and that shocked people into action. Eventually the whole thing died down and no laws were changed. I think many politicians are wary of kneejerk censorship since most of them remember what it was like to live in the shadow of the USSR, with all the self-censorship that entailed.

The terminator series is fucking horrible.

Imagine this. A FICTIONAL KILLER ROBOT FROM THE FUTURE goes back into time and kills INNOCENT FICTIONAL US CITIZENS!!!

WE MUST DECLARE WAR ON THE FICTIONAL KILLER ROBOTS FROM THE FUTURE TO PROTECT THE FICTIONAL US CITIZENS!!!

Oh well, at least I know not to write child porn in the court room to see if they'd consider keeping my arms and access to paper and pens a serious problem.

Apparently I'd be banned from papers and pens forever if I did. Would suck quite a lot to never be allowed to write again due to the chance of producing lolicon stories.
