alright in case anyone searches for this. i exported the anki notes as txt which created a column for the kanji and a column for the romaji, threw the txt into libreoffice calc, copied the romaji column and pasted it into some online romaji-to-hiragana converter and it spit out the hiragana as a horizontal list separated by spaces. i saved that list as a txt, imported it back into calc which put all words into one row but separate columns (if you make sure to check the "separated by spaces" option when importing), then copied that row and clicked edit->paste special->paste transposed, which converted the row into a column.

now i can import the file back into anki without the romaji.
