To be poor in spirit is a trait that afflicts everyone, it is to have the burden of sin, and it is something that must be recognised before the latter Beatitudes can be fulfilled. In Battler, this is exemplified through his growth between episode 1 - 5. He transcends from undoubting love and refusal to suspect his family, to being willing to seek the truth, and finally in the recognition of his 'sin' and remembering of Beato's true person.

Mourning plays a key role in Umineko across many of its characters, but in Battler, it is more than just feelings of loss. Battler mourns not merely the loss of his family, but comes to regret the personal outcome of the tragedy and the inevitability of it. It is also in his self-regret; regret for his sin towards Beato and his failure to understand her. And it is this failure that he mourns in episode 5, and breaks free from in episode 6 with his affirmation of love during the final courtroom debate. He is comforted through his shift in sentimentality, and not only by others around him.

As each Beatitude is in a particular order, one fulfilled after the other, this requires fulfilment of the former Beatitudes. Battler achieves righteousness through his rejection of sin and shallow understanding (poorness of spirit), actively seeking to find the truth in a way that does not exclude the breadth of the mystery in those involved.

Mercy is more than action, it is through Battler's perception that he fulfils this Beatitude. He does not look at Beato with scorn, but begins to empathise with her. And he is therefore shown mercy through Beato's appearance in the episode 6 courtroom debate in which she, in turn, shows him mercy.
>Blessed are the pure in heart, for they will see God
This Beatitude is the most evident one amongst them all in the answer arc, as it directly refers to Battler not only considering magic, but embracing it. Magic in this instance is not referring to the overtly supernatural, but a point of view excludes superficiality; magic itself is the significant meaning that something bears. A house is more than a mesh of bricks and wood, but bears meaning in its purpose as shelter for those who inhabit it.

Having pureness in heart, Battler makes peace not only through his embracing of magic, but his outward encouraging of it. To make peace is not a passive action, but requires one to attempt to make it. He exemplifies this significantly through his attempt to show Ange magic through the episode 8 Halloween party, involving every individual at the party contributing their part to this peace. Battler tries to show what this magic is because he understands it will achieve peace.

Not just Battler, but the Ushiromiya family are persecuted. But they are not saved because they are persecuted, but because of the righteousness behind their persecution. They are all persecuted even after death by the world's selfish twisting of the truth, but during this persecution, they embrace magic. And it is through this simultaneous persecution and righteousness that they persevere the ice and flames of the Inferno, climb the enduring heights of Mount Purgatory and achieve salvation in the Golden Land.

I agree none of the characters resemble each other. I was more referring to recurring themes, those of faith and doubt. The conflict even takes form in a similar way, with characters achieving moral growth during courtroom scenes; Dmitri in TBK and Battler in Umineko. No, that's not true. Nabokov was a highly descriptive writer with more of an interest in beautiful form and style than character psychology, so his main criticism of Dostoevsky's work was that he wrote novels like a dramatist and rarely concerned himself with describing e.g. characters' appearance or environment after mentioning them once. I don't necessarily think he was 'right', but they were just very different writers.
