I have long been of the opinion that you can gain a deeper understanding of someone's psychological issues by studying their 'fursona' and its quirks - similar to the way you can analyze someone's mental patterns by their /d/-style fetishes as you mentioned.

I find your first point and it's corollary to be illuminating. My question is: would this psycho-analysis include all the benign degrees, such as people, normal within the constraints here for not being furry, yet who watch Tom and Jerry and other animal cartoons; or play games such as Sonic, Spyro, or Crash Bandicoot? You could be onto a new way of behavioral analysis and it's psychological implications.
