Hello /jp/

I just inherited a flag much like the one pictured from my great grandfather, He probably took it as a trophy off some Japanese soldier in WW2.

I read that many soldiers had these and that they had their names and stuff on them.

So my question is this, Is it worth the effort to take the flag to the local Japanese embassy so they can get it to the soldier's family or is it not that big of a deal?

I want to do right by whoever owned the flag but if no one cares much then it would look pretty good on my wall.

Definitely Ebay

This.
If someone famous owned that flag then it could be worth thousands of dollars, if not then it's probably still worth a couple hundred.

>> No.3624549

Not sure if the embassy would even offer than kind of service but if they do that'd be really nice of you. It'd be interesting for the family to suddenly receive something like that.

>> No.3624548

You inherited it, then you're just gonna give it away? I don't know about that one, seems ignorant to your great grandfather to me.

I smirked at the 尽忠报国

its a war trophy you keep that shit your grandfather killed the shit out of some one to get it to you or it might have even been given to him after the war or by a pow point is its now in your family and its up to you to maintain and keep.

>It'd be interesting for the family to suddenly receive something like that.

And then he sees it on Ebay a month later from the very same family that the embassy gave it too. How would you feel then OP.

>> No.3624556

Have the flag translated, if it's owner was some sort of war hero or whatever sell it, if not then you could give it back to the Japanese.

Keep it and know you will never be as awesome as your great grandfather.

Meh, back in those day, they were used to walking 50 miles to school and back, barefoot, in 4 inches of snow.
Going 10s of miles away and back probably wasn't that hard in comparison.

You seem to have missed the implication, he wasn't meant to go to the base at all, he was meant to shoot the two japs behind a hill or something.

If it's full of names, it's not unusual to be entirely in kanji without any kana whatsoever, especially given the historical period. Contemporary Japanese uses much more kana.

It could have been drawn with the owner's blood. Some kamikaze pilots would do that and give the flag to their families before their final sortie.
