What really got to me, OP, was when you started mentioning otaku. I'm sure you know by now how that word has many negative connotations. I'd rather not be lumped in that category. There are many of us here that genuinely have an interest in Japanese culture, not focusing in just anime.

The past month or so I've relished seeing threads in /jp/ that weren't about touhou or visual novel screens. It was great reading everyone else's opinions/experiences (ilike in that recent Q&A thread sans the obvious trolls in that thread) that weren't about touhou or VN's. I think that's what /jp/ should have been about. We can at least start over now.

If mods don't want boards like /a/ or /jp/ to talk about personal problems, psychology, social or so (and the need is really here judging by the situation), they should simply create a new board for this.
It will keep the other clean and everyone will be happy.
