The arcade version is my personal favorite for songs and visuals, but most other people IRL I bring it up with point out the gameplay flaws that I can honestly agree with, like input delay even on the cabinet.
More subjective others dislike the less rigid/button oriented method of input, but I have a strong disagree there, since I also like stuff like MUSECA.

In my experiences in Japan it was the most popular hand-oriented game, with jubeat as a close second until around 2012-2013. After that Sound Voltex and Maimai took off like crazy over there. Feel free to disagree, but at least provide your own anecdotal evidence if so.

Don't really know about the US in particular, but beatmania in general has a real OG feel to it unlike newer titles, has a long history of its songs becoming popular outside of the player scene, has an active homebrew/modding scene, and is just generally known and has been played by people who care to explore further than DDR.
So it just has a lot to potentially talk about and has the reach that most people who have something to say here would have an opinion on it.

Even if they're old now, Beatmania and Pop'n still feel unique in a way that they aren't samey like other rhythm games' soundtracks. Compared to how a lot of newer games just get BMS tracks, 2hue licenses and very few originals, beatmania still go for electronic music and Pop'n a wide variety of music that only DJMax really competed against. The swing angle calculation has a cap, 70 points for 100° pre-swing and 30 points for 60° post-swing. Swinging more than that is unnecessary, so your analogy isn't completely accurate. You could argue that the angle needed for fullswing is too large, but requiring some swing angle for points very needed as it forces players to actually swing. There's also the last 15 points for cutting the blocks as as close to equal halves as possible.

However the scoring system is very different from other music games, since the only timing requirement is that you manage to connect your saber to a block flying at you. Maybe it doesn't readily appeal to people who are used to strictly timing accuracy based music games.

I remember there was a guy in IIDX International discord server who played IIDX in a long time but struggling to climb up. He very liked Cannon Ballers because that style was inspiration for him to play the game. (I dunno why but thats for real) Since he joined around that time when CB n1 drops he started to gitgud pretty much.
He's been very talkative guy but he's been severely harsh to some IIDX songs he didn't like. He have pretty much western music taste so he's been really sensetive when some shit like denpa/nanahira/prim/ichika came out. He never disputes about it with anyone.
He left after 2 years saying that this server became too much toxic to people who have diffirent opinion than the several most talkative regulars there.

as long as you are getting As and some high Bs here and there, you are doing it right
if you are getting lower than that on a new difficulty level, I'd suggest to first get more comfortable with easier stuff
like for example, if you are trying to break into 10s and you are clearing them consinstently with bad Bs, I'd spend some more time in the level 9 folder before trying 10s again
also, try playing with random on to get used to the wackier patterns that you will find on higher diffs

IIDX and to a lesser extent pop'n may not be "samey" in the same way that games like SDVX, Chunithm, or Wacca are, but the recent mixes definitely have their own homogenized J-core and jazz-electronica (respectively) general sounds that they don't deviate too far from.

If anything, DDR circa A20 has received the most diverse songlist of modern rhythm games. It's kind of hard to imagine songs like Step Machine, Mythomane, or Bounce Trippy as IIDX originals in the present day, and it's not because Step Machine has "step" in its name.
