For the record, the builtin netplay of this game blows copious amounts of ass if you're not playing with your next door neighbor. There's a netplay hack available on the wiki for it which improves things a lot, but it's still not as good as Caster, and both sides need to be using it. http://akatsuki.mizuumi.net/index.php/Main_Page

Correct, because it rewrites how the game handles networking.

It's recommended, though, because the built-in netplay has an incorrect implementation of input delay. That is, no matter what you input, it's going to block for input after one frame and frameskip a lot. It sucks.

It requires a bit of setup.

1. Run config.exe. If it doesn't work try running it in compatibility mode for Windows 2000.
2. Click the upper-right tab, and click the button next to the long string of letters and numbers.
3. Input your IP address in the first field, port number in the second field, and leave the third field alone.
4. (optional) The long string of characters is basically a "friend code," and you can add other people's codes to the list below.

If you use the SS Matching Web service, create a matching code, add one, you don't need to forward a port. It's automated. If you want to connect via IP, then both of you need to decide on a port.

From the wiki it seems that they are some sort of Nazi remnants, something like the Last Battalion. Akatsuki was some Imperial army goon who was experimented on by Nazis. So gentlemen, I like war.
