Pumping up two commanders is great and all, but there's only so much they can do with limited actions. You need a bunch of high-level commanders to be effective.

Case: I had a level 82 Rance on my last game (Yamamoto route). He didn't attack in the final battle, because the front rows I fielded were strong enough to take Xavier down in several hits.

No, not really. Give a high level Rance a monk (and Sill, obv), and he will be able to kill Orochi without much support. I only had Kenshin and Uruza from the Top tier dungeon cleaners when I killed him (and Uruza died right after the buff she gave)
The question is, how high level is your Rance. He should be at least in the 90's to do so. And that's reachable without much problems, trough affection items and sat bonuses.

Don't forget the +3 SAT bonuses. Grinding some first twenty levels few times might be a good idea to, to get more items. If you are lucky, you might even get some action books.

To recruit him, first destroy the Takeda house by force, then on another playthrough (or possibly by save reloading) tank through Takeda's blitz. You will get the option to assassinate Shingen, and afterwards the house will dissolve and they become ronin and recruitable to other houses.

To get them, cross your fingers and watch who the other houses recruit between turns, and attack the country that has one of them. You must capture them in battle to get them. This process can take an entire playthrough, though.

Of course, every commmander in the game is recruitable. The Takeda commanders are fucking bitches to recruit though, as they all become mercenaries and work for random countries once Takeda falls with the "assassination event", except Tourin who auto joins. Also, you cannot recruit them on your first playthrough.

Baba is a good deal for Rance love, since upgrading stats it may raise his cost a lot, but having two maxed Cavalry units (give Yamagata Emperor ring) who can also have Battle Rating Up at it's fullest is just too good.

Orochi-raped guy here. Playing more turns gave me Omachi, which I thought was not going to appear in this playthrough at all. I am now a happy camper, regardless of the damn dungeon results.

Try to use the cheated save and max out your army. In the few turns, even Ashikaga will have 2-3 thousand units as minimum and Demon army with One Eyed will be at 9999 even if you attack them 20 turns in game.

Any unit you like. I would use it on something that can hit at least two targets at the same time, like Shizuka (she already has rather low stats, so it won't be a problem to bump them back with book 1) or Magic. Uruza is kinda cool too, considering that amount of buffs depend on her troop amount and accurate shots will be more effective.
People often recommend to use it on maria, but I really don't see the profit in one 1hit kill that can't ignore defence or anything. I would just use ninjas and Yamamoto if I wanted to instakill somebody. Two kills or heavy damage sounds way more appealing.

Then there is Little Princess Miki and Demon King Rance (Kichikuou Rance Satella ending) but I don't think Xavier considered Miki or Gi to be Demon Kings as they are both nice while his Master Nighcisa was pretty much the most brutal Demon King (it was relly Gele but she never killed that many people and just tortured everyone into an inch of life left).

Beaten by the Demon Gi who was using Chaos. Was sealed by Gi who then became Demon King. Was freed in 3 and was raped by Rance. She only had 1/100 of her power at the time.

Fuck, I keep getting problems with running this game. Everytime I start up the game, it shows the Alice Soft logo and then the screen turns black and freezes. Anybody had a similar problem or know of a way to fix this?

Should I close them or is it better to end Shimazu and the (For some reason now resurrected) Hara now?
Also will Shimazu continue to steal my female commanders or is it just a one time thing?

I did 5-Star and only used Battle Rating manipulation in a single battle (Ikkyu's ability).
Granted, it wasn't easy and I might not have been able to do it if it hadn't been Ran route. But if you pick the right bonuses and play smart you can still get through it with pure strategy.
That said... yes, Battle Rating manipulation is very effective. You just have to be aware of its limitations, such as the fact that you're not actually doing any damage (future battles will have opponents at full strength, no kills), aren't getting much Pokkuru (no captures) and of course the fact that the opponent's troops remain high during the entire battle, causing extra damage (costs more gold).
Basically there's no super secret to it. Just play well, using what's most appropriate in any given situation.
