There other forms of が
But I can tell you most of the confusion for がcomes from fuzziness in translation from English into japanese of individual words that gets the meaning basically right but the grammar use off, because the grammar is so different.
So to learn it you have to either start thinking in japanese and learn it intuitively with natives (the smart way) or deconstruct all your translations.

You can not define strictly logically a difference between topic and subject really. A topic is a subject and a subject is a topic in English use of those terms. So perhaps the problem is thinking in those terms. You really just got to wing it till you think in japanese
I am driving
I do driving
I be drive
I drive
I (car) drive.
Driving is happening
(What is) Occurring is driving
Possibility of drive does exists

If you're gonna ascribe an English equivalent for が here (which you shouldn't), が is the "is" part of the sentence, not "a"
though technically the whole がいます would be the "is" because "is" is a verb in English and います is the verb, が simply marks the subject because it's a particle, this is unnecessary in English because we don't have particles just like how Japanese doesn't have articles so there is no equivalent to "a" in Japanese. "a" in the English sentence has no function in marking the bat as the subject of the verb, it serves to define that there is only one bat of no particular significance (we didn't use "the" for example)
