I got my N2 two years ago and haven't been doing any Japanese since, and I've been trying to get back in recently. Conversations with friends are reasonably smooth, but I've been struggling with reading my first books.

I read about half of the first harry potter book (just because I know that story really well and thought it would be an easy read), but even with this book I'm still struggling and reading so, so slowly. I love "high" literature and I'm looking forward to reading 雪国 and other such books in Japanese, but it's depressing that at my level I'm still struggling with harry potter.

So how does this work again?

Usada Pekora is written 兎田ぺこら, 兎 meaning rabbit (うさぎ) and 田 meaning rice field (た).

If I want to write her kanjis, just writing the reading in kana wont give me the right kanjis at all. The only way is to write the individual kanji readings themselves. So in order to get 兎田ぺこら I write うさぎたぺこら。

Is this how it is suppose to work or are there easier ways? Is this just how it is with names or will it be like this for everyday Japanese?

by reading. i only look up words in the dictionary when i'm reading novels like a native speaker. it'll be usually a word only relevant to a specific topic. like for example a term to refer to a structure of a castle

i'll be honest. i'm brazilian and most of the "advanced" words in english are just words that come from latin and are considered normal words in our language. like for example "crux"

you can easily guess what that word means if you're a portuguese speaker like me. because "cruz" is our word for cross. og used "nexus" the other day, that's just "nexo" in portuguese

You get the start from school (at third grade in my country) and then just watch english speaking media. For me it was watching youtubers. Took me like 4-5 years to even understand majority of the stuff that way since majority do not learn english from school so I'd say not studying at all but just immersing yourself works but it is really slow process.

And what I mean by watching youtube is that I just bruteforce it. First times I watched english streams I did not understand majority of the stuff they said and I didn't really try to look up stuff. If you put some effort to it then it is way faster.

I am still learning english by just immersing myself. Nowadays majority of the learning I get is through reading. If I would start reading an adult book in english I would most likely need to google some words every now and then.

And to note this is me not really trying to learn english but just consuming english media because it is fun.

and to add. I am Finno-Ugric so my language isn't that related to english and the structure and the words are totally different most of the time.

Other Europeans who speak Indo-European languages learn english way easily since so many words are alike so they can just pick up stuff instantly.
