VISUAL NOVELS > ANIME

Just... look what they've done to Tsukihime, F/sn, Umineko and Clannad! Wait.. that last one is not good example, since After Story series was really good.

Fate/stay night - probably the best visual novel ever!

This is Sakura - she's annoying as hell - but once she turns Dark she's really friendly and cute (>w<)
Uhmm yeah - ofc she's inferior to Tohsaka:

That was just to fill this 'about me' space...

ORIGINALS > ADAPTATIONS

A visual novel being adapted into an anime makes for a shitty anime. An anime being adapted into a visual novel would make for a shitty visual novel. It has nothing to do with whether it's a visual novel, anime, manga, book, film, play, vrscreen or simulated reality. Adaptations are simply shit.

The original film adaptation of Frankenstein disagrees with you. In spite of taking liberties with the source material, it produced something brilliant in its own right.

Fixed.

You kind of have to have animation to be anime, that's why it's called anime, because it's animation.

Focus is very different most of the time, presentation too since you usually rely on a single viewpoint in first-person, and VN medium does not expand on that many genres in comparison.

Actually no, putting aside the porn with plot ones, most VNs are just high school love drama in an harem of females where, if you're lucky, you get a 1:2 ratio of males : females, but often you'll end with the mc, a silly sidekick and tons of females.
True, VNs focuses on single routes Animes on everybody, but only because animes try to satisfy a broader audience trying not to piss fanboys of one heroine aiming for the other one and just leaving everything in the dark, using the generic dumb male lead as an excuse.
How many time have you seen the generic tsundere getting angry over a pantyshot, or because the mc walked inside the bathroom/bedroom/locker while she was changing, etc etc.
Or the generic big tittied moè stereotype.
Or the generic childhood friend playing the tragic heroine.
Or the generic friend who doesn't give a fuck about the mc until she magically falls in love as well.
It's all the same shit.

Now it makes sense.
And 'most of the time' applies not just in Romantic VNs, but others with different content.
When it's adapted, the pace, events and characterization are mixed in a way that makes the anime roll easier on the eyes while getting chunks from everywhere to cover bases.

So, even if they are shit, the adaptation creates new shit (from a different perspective at least).

Because, as you said, Anime focuses on a different (also broader usually) audience.

Far more often in anime than eroge actually.

Well not all adaptations fail. Azumanga Daioh was great. JC Staff did a great job with the 4koma source material.
Also madhouse did a great with the Fukomoto manga and Bible Black was great as a hentai anime.

The anime adaptations of those Orbit Soft VN's are completely insane. Plots ran out of order, an episode was completely done in black and white, protagonist roles were changed, etc. It was watchable simply because it was so bizarre. But in the end I feel it beats the pants off any KyoAni VN adaptation.

Now here's the crazy part: the director (Yuji Yamaguchi) also did the Fate anime and will do the UBW movie. I wonder what happened. Maybe he realized that he couldn't change too much or legions of TM fans would be frustrated.

>> No.3560372

Clannad was already not so good, and F/sn's anime wasn't terrible. Well, okay, it wasn't great, but most of it wasn't as cringe-worthy as something like Shingetsutan Tsukihime.

It's a rare adaptation that's greater than the original. It's true for books and movies, so no reason why it shouldn't be for picture books and Japanese cartoons.
