So I'm over half way through core6k I've kinda stalled though I feel like I'm just forgetting a lot of new cards now and I'm kinda burned out on Anki and need a change of pace.

I was doing reading before starting core 6k and the reason I started was because I was encountering so many new words I thought it made more sense to do a vocab deck first rather than feeling like I'm encountering a new word every 30 seconds.

Hi all,

I'm from the US but currently based in Tokyo where I work for an IT company. I've been here for around 1 year and haven't made much progress (I could probably pass N5 at this point, but that's it).

My company agreed to hire a private tutor once a week for me, and I'm also able to take group classes twice per week. The company also agreed that I can spend 30-50% of my working hours studying Japanese. Some things have changed since I started working here and they really need me to learn.

That said, they're requiring me to take the JLPT test and expect me to pass N5 by July 2022. So, 1 year from now.

My current resources are:

Private tutor once per week (company sponsored)

Group class twice per week (company sponsored)

Genki textbook (currently working through it by myself)

1,000 Kanji (currently working through it by myself)

1-year subscription to WaniKani

Of course, when I get vaccinated at the end of this month I plan to finally start going out again. Going to Meetups will help with listening and speaking. I'm lucky to be based in Japan, but I haven't had many opportunities to actually use Japanese this past year, as I've been working from home and not going out unless absolutely necessary.

So, I'm wanting to ask what some good additional resources are that I haven't listed. Any info you can share will be greatly appreciated. N2 seems unachievable honestly, but if I do fail, it needs to be only by a few points so I have a strong argument with my company.

I thought I'd give a shout out to the people that worked hard to put out a new version of the Japanese verb conjugation page on Wikipedia, because I think it is an excellent entry point into this subject. It is clear, easy, and free for everyone to use, at different levels of your learning journey.

The amount of work done by two individual contributors during the months of May and June, to finally end on July 4th can be seen here in the revision history. They coordinated mostly on their respective Talk pages, and it's beautiful to see this discussion, where critiques are formulated wisely, never taken badly, which ends up being a very constructive process, culminating in the creation of this new page.

It is extremely inspiring to see what can be done by just a couple volunteers, some free time, and great motivation, over a decently short time frame, and it is now out there to profit to everyone. The placement of Wikipedia results often at the top of Google searches will hopefully ensure that this page of good quality can reach a good amount of people too.

Maybe seeing this will also give people some ideas and motivation to modify other pages, since as the two volunteers point out, many pages are lackluster on the Japanese language wiki.

Finally, it is good to notice that the page still hosts the super awesome infographic made by Aeron Buchanan over 10 years ago now, which has only been updated minimally a couple times since then, as it is already so perfect. I often go back to it when I learn a new concept to see where it fits in that sheet, and end up seeing sometimes a clearer picture of what I just learned.

i started out with really simple nukige, there isnt much new vocab once you learn all the bedroom lingo so you can focus on pleasuring yourself while occasionally learning a new word
the best bet for me is to find a vinnie that i can mostly already read that way im not constantly stopping to make new cards, ideally something that i only stop once every 30 minutes or so. this can be hard to find as you dont know the level of difficulty of a vn before you start reading it usually. so i try things out and get a feel for them, usually just glancing over sections that dont make any sense at all and not bothering to make a card if half the paragraph is beyond my skill
the important thing to do is to just read the material and infer when you can and not hyperfocus on autistically making a card for every single new word you encounter

I'm not so concerned about that so much as general acquisition. I read an ero doujin last night with a dictionary like a supreme autist and did just fine, but I had to reference a few things here and there. Though I'm not yet at the level of stopping only every 30 mins in a VN, I too think it could be a good step in the right direction. I will try some nukige like you, and persist as best I can to pass the initial hurdles of vocab I don't know yet. Not sure if I'll decide to make cards or not. Either way, it's time to give it a go.
