Probably because China was mostly sheltered for a long time. A boom of wealth and culture from outside will have a big impact like that.

How have you not noticed by now that the Chinese market is larger and they're easier to pander to. The gaming industry alone has 600 million, double the size of the US, and many many times larger than the gaming scene there. Now think of Japan, a smaller country. It's like comparing pennies to half dollar coins. It's like trying to buy a car at the hundred yen store.
