Why does the media constantly refer to assault rifles as "machineguns"?

I know it costs more money to print longer words in a paper...but why dont they just use "rifle", which would not only be more accurate, but would also save them money over the longer spelling of "machinegun"?

Because the word "rifle" is associated with long barreled firearms that fire only a single shot with each pull of the trigger.

The reason why assault rifles are commonly called machineguns, is because that's what the first firearms that would automatically reload and fire the next projectile for the duration that the trigger was pulled were called, and the term was then associated with that mode of firing.
