Once you acquire a structure, NONE of the previous work that you've put into attempting to acquire it transfers over. Only once you've acquired an understanding of what was said does further work cement the understanding.

This means that SRS systems don't work. SRS for vocab is good in the sense that it makes it faster to read things, especially for a language that uses chinese characters, but only actually reading more and more things and understanding new unique messages will count towards your acquisition of the language.
Drilling 10,000 sentences in Anki literally doesn't do anything. All that time is better spend just reading more and more new things and gaining more comprehensible input.
If you want to drill vocab words in order to increase your vocabulary and recognition of kanji, so that when you are out there reading it makes it faster to read the word so that it's faster to read the whole sentence, that's fine. So I was doing JLPT mock exams and encountered a word in hiragan that I didn't know. It was けんがく。
I knew I didnt know this word for sure so began a guessing game. The memo in which the word was used was concerning teachers. So I assumed the がく part to be 学.
After weighing my options I ended up going with 研学 , assumed it would be something like "study" or "research" and balanced my answer on that interpratation.
Sadly I failed and the word the memo meant was 見学 meaning inspection but it turns out the word I came up with actually exists and meands "study" indeed. Only downside is it doesnt appear to be used often.
Doesn't change the fact that it felt good to do this guessing game and be half correct. I hope stuff like that will come up more in the future and I won't have to sit with dictionary all the time and consume japanese like I consume the english language - extracting meaning and kanji of unknown words from context.

when I started reading my first Vinny I couldn't even read basic basic words like 向かう、軒先、or 蝉 but after using yomichan my understanding of japanese made very large leaps in progress between the time i started and the time I finished. if I relied on translations that never would have happened.

For the first few weeks I translated things literally word for word into english to get an understanding of how things are said in japanese and I think it worked because I've never studied any grammar from like tae kim or something yet I understand almost everything that I read so long as I know all the vocab.
