I think I’m in somewhat of a grey area because I am half Japanese yet I didn’t learn as a child. That being said, my mom pretty much ONLY speaks to me in Japanese but if there are any other halfies out there, you can probably agree with me in that you don’t have full on intellectual convos with your moms so I’m like … KINDA fluent in listening.

As for wanikani, I’m only lvl 7 after a couple of months and I can already see myself going “ohhhh so that’s what that means”. In a way, I feel it’s unlocking my inherent fluency. I’m still absolute shit with talking … aside from having native-level pronunciation, when speaking, gramattically I probably sound somewhere close to a 3rd grader (but a 3rd grader who’s smarter than the other 3rd graders if that makes sense).

It’s a really strange place to be in because beginner stuff doesn’t really help me at all and intermediate stuff is very often too hard. The bottom line, though, is that I find that it’s definitely helping with becoming more “fluent”. i would definitely suggest to start doing a LOT of listening practice though.

>Said by a person who is running: "私は走りたくて走ってるんじゃないです"
>"I'm not running because I want to."
Shit like this makes me feel like I'll never be able to effortlessly and automatically understand Japanese. Every sentence feels like a brand new puzzle to decipher, even when I supposedly "know" all of the vocab and grammar in the sentence. The basic way of expressing any idea in Japanese is so different from English that it makes me feel like there will never be an end to the number of patterns and situations I have to learn.
In this case because it was a manga and I could see that the sentence was said by a person who was being forced to run when they didn't want to, I was able to figure out pretty quickly that the intended meaning was "I'm not running because I want to". But without any context my first guess probably would have been something like "I want to run but I'm not running".

So I've been extensively researching about different methods of learning Japanese since about 2 months ago, while since about a month ago, been slowly studying Kanji meaning + most used onyomi, Genki and some Cure Dolly. Also Anki for Vocab and acquired from genki and the Kanji method mentioned above. I've gathered a ton of resources from browsing this sub, googling and other sites.

All in all, I'm doing 15 new kanji per day on anki and I'm currently at Ch.3 of Genki (because of exams period, I've been taking it slow)

But for the last couple of days I've been feeling extremely lost and been doubtful of my approach.

It started with watching a couple of Cure Dolly's videos about verbs, and getting thrown into a rabbit hole about not learning -masu forms of verbs but instead the -te/-ta etc. A few days later I started stumbling upon the immersion, comprehensible input schools of thought, which obviously I had stumbled upon when researching my options.

I think I'm happy with the way I'm doing this first pass through the Kanji, getting to know radicals etc. is so rewarding, so I think that's good.

But I've not been writing a whole ton, instead I type with my keyboard and check my answer at a website that has all the questions of genki with correct-checking. But as far as grammar, comprehensible input, vocab etc. I'm lost.

Would it be a good idea to switch how I do things around entirely? Maybe keep doing Cure Dolly + Genki, but also make sure to get some comprehensible input each day?

Reading these paragraphs of non-sense that I've typed out, I'm sorry, but really, after gathering so many different opinions, websites and resources, my thoughts are as tangled up as this post. So thank you in advance!

Reaching JLPT N1 level is rough. I just finished studying all grammar points for the JLPT N1 test and have been reflecting on my journey with Japanese. And I have to say, reaching the N1 level is extremely rough and a lot of people on this subreddit really downplay it. You'll constantly see people talk about cramming the studying in a year or two to pass it (, which I can see being plausible as a full-time student studying specifically for JLPT in Japan) or people on r/languagelearning putting down the N1 as "only B1" (, which I'm not sure is entirely true). It took an incredible amount of effort to work through all these grammar points and internalize them. And I honestly believed that I would have viewed the N1 grammar book as such a waste of time based off so many people on here talking about how uncommon the points are in real life, which made me resentful to even start studying it. But I must say that it feels so good to have finally put all this information inside my head and it is, in fact, very useful. Just yesterday I was reading movie descriptions in Japanese and を境に popped up. Or when I was reading Murakami's Colorless Tazaki Tsukuru (, which is the first book I fully finished/studied in Japanese a month ago) and noticed にせよ pop up a lot. Or how 余儀なくされる crops up in a ton of newspaper articles. It took such an incredible amount of effort to get to the point where I actually feel like I could sit down and potentially even pass the JLPT N1 (probably going to try in December, maybe July if my anxiety gets the best of me). The journey has been so arduous, but very worthwhile. I honestly feel like Japanese has become such a big part of my life that I cannot fathom having one day without interacting with the language.

TL;DR: Getting to the JLPT N1 level takes a ton of studying and you'll see a lot of posts online downplaying how difficult it is to reach this level of Japanese.

How fast are you guys learning Kanji? I'm a beginner and I started WaniKani. I looked up a lot of opinions before I did and found a lot of people complaining it was too slow. It was slow, at first, but it quickly becomes overwhelming. It teaches not just Kanji but a lot of vocabulary. If this is slow, how fast are you all learning? I've seen the posts saying "I learned 10k Kanji in 2 months" or whatever but I'm skeptical, is that short term cramming or really long term memory? I believe I have a decent ability to remember written language but I'm a native English speaker with no familiarity with Kanji whatsoever, my brain can't adjust to this without time. WaniKani promises to teach 2000 Kanji and 6000 vocabulary terms in a year, but most people take longer. In addition to that, WaniKani only teaches recognition and not recall, and it doesn't teach stroke order, so you need to do a lot more work than WaniKani gives you to actually be able to use Kanji. I'm afraid I may not be good at pacing myself. I tend to listen to a Pimsleur lesson over and over, which is probably unnecessary because I'm only supposed to understand 80% of it before moving on. It's difficult to know how well you should really absorb something before moving on. I don't know if all the people on the internet who cram information super fast are truly accelerating their learning or unproductively focusing on numbers and video-game-like markers of achievement over depth and understanding.

Here is the biggest thing about the input hypothesis and the comprehensible input theory that Krashen and them worked on, that for some reason is completely ignored by the language learning community despite being THE MOST IMPORTANT THING: The natural order hypothesis. This is a well researched idea that is true, the evidence for it is extremely thorough and yet no one seems to understand what this actually means.

Basically, ALL humans learn ALL languages and their grammar and structure in a predefined innate order that WE CAN NOT CHANGE and that no one actually knows what the order is. We know some things, like English acquirers always learn the -ing form of verbs before the -s thing at the end of third person, but we don't actually know what the complete order is for acquiring English, or any other language.

What this really means is something that must be stressed above all else: NO MATTER HOW MANY TIMES YOU DRILL A GRAMMAR POINT, NO MATTER HOW MANY TIMES YOU WORK THROUGH A TEXTBOOK, NO MATTER HOW HARD YOU TRY, IF IT IS NOT TIME FOR YOUR BRAIN TO ACQUIRE A SPECIFIC GRAMMAR POINT, YOU WILL N-E-V-E-R TRULY ACQUIRE IT UNTIL THE TIME COMES. If your brain is supposed to learn grammar point A before grammar point B, you HAVE TO go on to acquire that grammar point A before you can ever truly acquire grammar point B. No matter how long and hard you study grammar point B, you will NEVER EVER ACTUALLY LEARN/ACQUIRE IT until grammar point A is acquired.

What this really means is that textbooks are absolutely worthless, because we don't know what the natural order is so there is no way for textbooks to be written in the proper order.

The only thing any one who is learning any language can actually do, is just continue to get more and more and more comprehensible input and allow the brain to naturally acquire the language and it's grammar and structure in the natural order. Nothing else will ever work.

I don't know why the natural order is so ignored in the language learning community. People continue to grind out textbooks and do grammar shit when that shit will NEVER EVER EVER work.

Grinding flashcards doesn't mean anything if your brain hasn't naturally acquired that part of the language. So, students at the schools I work at have planted flowers and I’m seeing this kanji all over the flower gardens at the school: 班 (はん / squad)

Since it’s level 48 in WaniKani, I haven’t encountered it yet in my studies, but thanks to the radicals, I could start playing with the kanji in my head. I thought I’d share my 6 degrees of separation for a peek into peak Rego brain.

班王り王おうりおうオリオ(英語発音)Oreo Oreo Cookies

Now I’m hungry. Damn you gardening.

Sidenote: Alternate Mnemomic - I want to join the Oreo Squad with Han Solo to fight against the Hydrox empire.

I'm lucky if I walk out with 15 cards for the DAY. maybe the anime im watching is too difficult; I can only watch so much drama/romance SoL shit, but when I watch something that I'm more interested in like action/mystery/adventure, I get next to nothing. guess i have to grind out boring shit for the next month or 2... g g

too many sound effects in japanese, and worse is that they're repeated for just a single word. imagine saying "that slime was bothering me so i powpow'ed it and it boingboing'ed on the ground".
do japanjins really? maybe i will just stick to reading and never speak.

i was like this at one point, but then i switched to vocab cards for a couple thousand words until i felt like sentence cards were actually more useful at my level. might be worth it to never switch for the faster reps, i just dont want to have to deal with making hint fields or whatever shit people do nowadays to distinguish words with multiple meanings
