Unlock your extra fleets as fast as you can so you can actually start getting some expedition income.
Don't waste your resources on construction just yet (outside of mandatory quests). For the most part, the girls you get from drops will do just fine for world 1. You might face some heavy cruisers or even a battleship, but with enough levels even your meager fleet of destroyers and light cruisers can take them down with ease.
Speaking of leveling, do your PVPs. You might lose all of them, but even then they give more xp than normal sortieing and you don't have to repair anyone afterwards.
Lastly, like everyone else has said, don't advance to a new node if one ship is heavily damaged. Someone can be taiha'd at a node and won't sink there, but going on to any nodes after that will put her in severe danger. It's better to end the sortie if someone is in the red.

Get yourself Yuudachi Shigure and Isuzu K2 ASAP, don’t underestimate the value of a good CA, whenever you decide to do your first event: 1 don’t worry if you don’t finish the first time, 2: never prioritize farming over clearing, and don’t LSC unless you have more resources than you know what to do with left over after an event.
And while we’re on LSC: don’t go for Yamato class too early, it’s extremely rare that you’ll ever use them unless you can horde resources like a madman.

What I used to do regarding LSC was doing an end of event, where I don't need any more resources daily LSC. Just get your daily construction done with LSC. They'll be completed eventually and then after you've zeroed your resources you can spend the downtime stockpiling for next event.
Then when you've colle all the kans and completed all the missions, you can then just sit back like me and basically afk until the next event, though do a couple long expeds a day.

Just carry on as far as you can, cruisers will come either from daily builds or drops.
Above all, don't try to rush. This isn't casual shit like that fake boat game, it's mostly about handling logistics. If you burn too much too fast, you'll be in a tough situation, especially with no expedition teams as of yet. But don't be too nervous about lack of expeditions as of yet, your resources regenerate on their own up to a cap of 20k. To stock past that, then you need expeditions.
Do your daily builds, try to progress through maps as far as you can, don't be frustrated when the ships fail because they will, but you can always try again. Do not advance when a ship is red or she runs the risk of sinking.
Above all, do not neglect DDs. It's easy to dismiss them early on because they barely scratch anything that isn't a destroyer itself, but events depends greatly on their ability to finish a boss off with TCI, and (some of them) to remove submarines on the way.
Oh and remember. These things are your enemy. Do not try to befriend or fuck them.

Unfortunately no free slots outside of doing those DMM point event things. I wouldn't recommend expanding your roster this early, since you wouldn't have the resources to level/field them anyways. I'd say pick out a roster of like 40 destroyers and 1 of every ship heavier than that to make up your core fleet, the rest of the open slots left for drops. You can expand whenever you want so don't feel pressured to keep everyone at the start.

Depends on the map really. Different comps can do different things on maps. Wiki has the most optimal comps, but https://kc.piro.moe/nav will show everything that's worked.

For equipment loadout, you're almost free to do whatever but some choices make a lot more sense than others.

For that, you should refer to the wiki. Each map is listed and contains the routing rules for it.
Routing rules works like this: it's either random (we don't have this much anymore after the HTML5 rework), or it's based upon your fleet or certain characteristics of your fleet.
This early on, you'll probably not have much to worry about. But to give you an idea, the very first 2 maps have routing rules.
For 1-1, having a single ship has a much greater chance to route you towards the boss, whereas more has the chance to off-route you. For 1-2, you'll get guaranteed routing to the boss with 5 or less ships on your fleet - provided 4 of them are DDs - and a random element to get off-routed if you have 6 or have less than 4 DDs.
Later, it expands into things like a certain LoS score, if your fleet is fast or slow, etc.
But that's all for later. For now, the best fleet is mostly what you can field, while following routing rules for less pain on the compass rolls.

For those of you who couldn't finish the event on any difficulty, what was the reason? Waited too long for underperforming superfriends? Ran out of resources and too proud to drop difficulty? Reverse RTA thrills? Just the type of person that procrastinates until the deadline?
