And 'choice' doesn't happen as many are so broken by being slaves that they have to follow the commands of actual monsters or die.
As much as you try to say 'but some make it out' there is still a huge, off screen population that continues to live in fear with no choice as they are terrified of death and hoping that they are slightly more useful than the next person so that they don't get thrown into the stew pot, turned into the next training dummy, or just made into a 'toy' to be played with till it stops moving.
