i'll concede this for the sake of argument but now we're left with the question what rtk does for a beginner

why would anyone waste their time on it

>> No.35274190

>>35274160
but it is dumb
the only valid argument for rtk is that it can help you in the very beginning when every character looks the same
you'll learn how similar looking kanji may differ in certain parts
you'll also learn stroke order concepts which can help you with lookups
however both of these advantages you'll have gained after your ~300th character, after that it's just diminishing returns
you'd have to be insane to do the whole thing

>> No.35274200

>what rtk does for a beginner
i can say what it did for me. i had a really hard time with kanji in the beginning, words didn't stick to my memory. they just looked like random squiggles. rtk helped me with that.
maybe some people have an easier time remembering kanji without it but i wasn't one of those people.

Please enjoy my blogpost.

About four days ago, I used this addon to add pitch accent information to my core 10k deck: https://ankiweb.net/shared/info/148002038

Since then, I've gotten better at distinguishing pitch accent; which, given I had no previous experience, I suppose is not too surprising. I had trouble telling atamadaka and heiban apart, and sometimes had difficulty telling precisely where the downstep in a nakadaka word occured. Hearing (many) words pronounced by a native speaker while silmultaneously having the pitch accent pattern displayed visually seems to have helped my brain learn to better identify pitch, and I don't have these problems as much anymore.

To test myself, I went on youtube and tried analyzing the pitch accent of youtubers' sentences, and I seemed to do okay. I got it mostly right (of course pausing to think about each sentence).

I noticed that the pitch accent pattern this addon assigns to a word is often inaccurate (I double checked with OJAD), and that it often doesn't have information about very common words. For example, つまり is marked as heiban, though according to OJAD and my hearing of the audio file, it's atamadaka, and the pattern for 木曜日 is not provided.

Nonetheless, in my opinion, it's still worth using.

I just got done with picking myself back up from a hiatus (1.8k cards).

What I would recommend is
1) suspending all of the cards that are due right now and flagging them a unique color
2) sort them by highest ease to lowest ease
3) unsuspending a chunk of those cards everyday

If you try to tackle it all at once, you're going to end up in a terrible loop where all of the cards you re-learned end up at the back of the line behind all of the other cards you have due, and then when you eventually get to the cards you have re-learned, you'll have forgotten all of them again

Unsuspending by highest ease means you're reviewing the cards you remember, before you forget them. You're going to mess up on all of your lowest ease cards anyways, so you can re-learn them last.

you have to take japanese on its own meaning. you have to simulate a japanese mind that can understand it as spoken without having to translate it internally. its one of the reasons japanese is such a hard language because its entire mindset is different from a western language perspective

think of saying "je ne sais quoi". it works only in french because it loses its expression style when translated literally to english and those languages are closely related. now imagine how much you lose translating japanese

colloquially we would say you know it. you correctly feel it out because it matches patterns you've intuitively sensed. you know it. if someone incorrectly intuits the pattern or can't intuit it at all then they don't know it. it's as simple as that. the "feel" phrasing is obfuscation. if someone incorrectly translates a sentence then they just don't know that sentence and the antidote is to learn japanese, not "feel it".

i understand the distinction you're trying to make. there is a difference between someone consciously learning/knowing grammar rules in an abstract sense and someone understanding them at real speed. i'm saying your terminology and the fact you're even making a distinction in these threads is retarded. if an anon translates something incorrectly then they just don't know that sentence (and depending, japanese). "feel it" in that situation means "you don't know japanese. learn it." so just say that. it doesn't mean "reread that sentence but feel it this time." feel what? they obviously don't have the intuition for it so there's nothing they can feel except this foot up their ass. it's nonsensical. it doesn't help with anything. just tell them to get more input.

if you're just starting, google what the ガキs read in elementary school. there is a gazillion authors
> something like this should do https://rosuchebnik.ru/material/spisok-knig-na-leto-dlya-nachalnoy-shkoly/
youtube (and the internet in general) is huge in russia, and provides a variety of different topics
> https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=o_069yPllVo
movies and tv-shows are obvious things to look for. russian dramas are like japanese dramas in terms of quality, they're corny and there is a shit ton of them.
if you're gonna read books, try imperial era stuff like pushkin, tolstoy, dostoevsky. everyone likes them.

sorry, that i keep forcing these questions like an annoying twat but i want to know this

you're telling me that you didn't study grammar, you just watched stuff and occasionally read and that was enough to learn russian. i just want to confirm that this was your method

you're going to look up grammar constructions in the same manner you look up words.
russian grammar has complex conjugations and cases that drive bluepilled learners crazy, but memorizing them is not going to help so you might as well skip.

>the proof lies in the fact that "learning" is not in the thread subject or anywhere else in the op this thread
the word "learning" itself is not in the OP but the idea of learning is in fact in the OP when it links you to a guide

what is a guide?
>A document or book that offers information or instruction; guidebook.
instruction -> instruct
>teach (someone) a subject or skill.
what is learning?
>the acquisition of knowledge or skills through experience, study, or by being taught.
>by being taught.

this thread deals with the subject of learning japanese when it links you to guides and resources. denying this is ridiculous

hi. do you find the number all that useful? i feel like it's a little arbitrary unless you have a graph like pic related.

except you'd need a graph for every frequency dict you use, and you'd have to reference these graphs. so why not cut out the middle man?

instead of saying put the x-axis of this graph in the dict put the y-axis in

i also have the innocent corpus one so i can kinda triangulate the """true""" frequency with all 3 dicts combined. it might be better to do it like that but its still pretty arbitrary since you dont really have a frame of reference for what the 95th percentile for eg means practically. though i barely mine anymore so im prolly not the best person to ask
