About four days ago, I used this addon to add pitch accent information to my core 10k deck: https://ankiweb.net/shared/info/148002038

Since then, I've gotten better at distinguishing pitch accent; which, given I had no previous experience, I suppose is not too surprising. I had trouble telling atamadaka and heiban apart, and sometimes had difficulty telling precisely where the downstep in a nakadaka word occured. Hearing (many) words pronounced by a native speaker while silmultaneously having the pitch accent pattern displayed visually seems to have helped my brain learn to better identify pitch, and I don't have these problems as much anymore.

To test myself, I went on youtube and tried analyzing the pitch accent of youtubers' sentences, and I seemed to do okay. I got it mostly right (of course pausing to think about each sentence).

I noticed that the pitch accent pattern this addon assigns to a word is often inaccurate (I double checked with OJAD), and that it often doesn't have information about very common words. For example, つまり is marked as heiban, though according to OJAD and my hearing of the audio file, it's atamadaka, and the pattern for 木曜日 is not provided.

Nonetheless, in my opinion, it's still worth using.

I got too busy with school and work shortly after covid hit and have done next to no study for the past year and a bit.
Is it worth trying to pick this deck back up? Should I just restart since I've likely forgotten almost everything?

I just got done with picking myself back up from a hiatus (1.8k cards).

What I would recommend is
1) suspending all of the cards that are due right now and flagging them a unique color
2) sort them by highest ease to lowest ease
3) unsuspending a chunk of those cards everyday

If you try to tackle it all at once, you're going to end up in a terrible loop where all of the cards you re-learned end up at the back of the line behind all of the other cards you have due, and then when you eventually get to the cards you have re-learned, you'll have forgotten all of them again

Unsuspending by highest ease means you're reviewing the cards you remember, before you forget them. You're going to mess up on all of your lowest ease cards anyways, so you can re-learn them last.

I should write a book about my kanji study method and bank off it like heisig did. Mine actually works too. Unfortunately my method can be summed up into two words, so it's hard to write a book.

My method is: read more.

I met another foreigner who spoke much better than me but his arrogance put me off and really made me think that I need to not just speak fluently but learn how to be a better person. I've spent so much time on djt that I feel superior to other people who aren't as fluent but my arrogance is pushing other people away. I used to get a lot of hate for speaking so poorly but after I got better I started to look down on other foreigners and always try to one up people in conversations by showing off my vocabulary or trying to correct other people's speech. My value as a person doesn't depend on being fluent but I've had this unhealthy attitude towards language learning for so long.

colloquially we would say you know it. you correctly feel it out because it matches patterns you've intuitively sensed. you know it. if someone incorrectly intuits the pattern or can't intuit it at all then they don't know it. it's as simple as that. the "feel" phrasing is obfuscation. if someone incorrectly translates a sentence then they just don't know that sentence and the antidote is to learn japanese, not "feel it".
