It won't be around for a while.

Also, we're getting people to pool together airship parts in order to construct a personal ring meeting area / Touhou tea party or whatever you want to call it. If you go to Lower Iron City and talk to the engineer in this screenshot, he'll give out a free airship part to those who are levels 30+ and have 10 prestige points. What he gives out changes at set periods, we're not sure as of yet how long that is yet. Extra parts can be used to trade with other parts or be sold off in order to purchase whatever other parts necessary or furniture if already constructed.
Other rings might also wish to endeavor in this activity of getting your own ring members to start gathering parts. If that's the case, we'll gladly cooperate in helping getting your own little fortress' up if we have a part you need.

Just remember, all players are capable of building airships. This is just something to get the balls rolling on guild activities and what not.

shaman takes a bit more effort because you need to know the elemental weakness chart (not that it's hard) and change your spells accordingly. however, you can solo cinns at earlier levels than wizards.

wizard is a bit easier and it's not like it's hard to find a runner, which arguably might be better exp/hour if they're a good runner. i could 1shot cinns at lv28, maybe earlier but i had no lv5 spells.

I'll have to correct myself here. The tutorial mentions that only owners can operate the airship and can set the protocols to who is and isn't allowed in. They're able to fly the airship to inaccessible areas such as Morg Island as well as towns or npc areas with stations. That said, owners can load up passengers and then get them to wherever they need to get to.

They aren't tied to rings specifically, hence why every player has the ability to get their own airship.

For those of us who seek to restrict gameguard's access to our computers as much as possible and still be able to run the game, do you have some guidelines for us?

Like preventing it from reading and modifying the gameguard files and the exe will cause it to error out, and failure to install the driver will prevent it from starting and so forth? Only allowing it to run minimally without interfering in other processes that don't concern it.

Although I've been getting a feeling lately that if gameguard fails to read even a single process it will close itself after a few minutes. It's just a theory but lately it's been getting more and more plausible.
If that truly is the case, is there a way to prevent gameguard from knowing the processes are there altogether, or would we have to turn the entire OS's processes into a full-fledged rootkit to evade it?

Not really since they must have given your account/ip to the game company, but if you can modify gameguard, you can just force it to be unable to report to its server. I think the simplest solution for someone who can't do that is to just use a firewall and block outgoing ftp and some other port I can't recall at the moment, it goes to a korean IP address (INCA GG HQ).

>>3515758

>>3514898
> For those of us who seek to restrict gameguard's access to our computers as much as possible and still be able to run the game, do you have some guidelines for us?

Gameguard has many modules, but I'll explain what they do from what I remember(they might have changed names since the last time I checked):
- npgg9x/NT - this is an user-mode hook dll, it's injected in all processes. It's basically a user-mode rootkit which tries to intercept some 50 something API calls. It will stop most API calls that try to affect the game in some way. You can bypass these user-mode hooks by many methods, but this is generally a bad idea if the driver is running: this dll signals the driver that the API call went through it. If the driver sees an API call which didn't go through it, it will assume you're trying to bypass it, and will force a reboot/BSoD.
- npgmup - updater, grabs new versions of files from the server indicated in the encrypted *.ini file in the game's directory, that file also contains some delicious settings, but I better not say much.
- npptNT2 - speedhack check driver, opens I/O access to all apps, (well known, and unpatched for years) security vulnerability right here.
- npsc - speedhack check module, it doesn't do much, and may even be optional. It just checks timing of your CPU/OS in many ways to detect irregularities.
- NPSCAN/*scan - based on their AntiVirus product (they're an AV company too), it can scan for various viruses/trojans and some "hack tools". Many cheats are detected using this.

>> No.3515896

>>3515894
- GameGuard.des - calls updater and does a few other things that I can't recall at the moment.
- The game executable - this is linked against gameguard's library, which will load GameGuard.des and GameMon
- GameMon - This is IT - a separate application which coordonates everything gg does. It also contains an embedded kernel-mode driver which it dumps, the driver hooks various syscall's in the kernel, and also provides process cloaking capabilities(it is a full-fledged rootkit, except it's not really used maliciously, depending on your interpretation of that term). It contains its own scanner as well, and contains the "secret" protocol needed for authenthficating your client as a valid gg client among other things. Not all games have the game server implement this protocol(!) - if you patch the game(which will often be packed/protected itself) to not load gg at all, you may fully get rid of it, but only if the server doesn't expect your client to be able to serve requests using this special protocol. Lately they've been putting some pretty strong armor on this one(TheMida with all the bells and whistles).

> Like preventing it from reading and modifying the gameguard files and the exe will cause it to error out, and failure to install the driver will prevent it from starting and so forth? Only allowing it to run minimally without interfering in other processes that don't concern it.

You can do this in many ways, you could even set up your own local update server and have it download the same old stale updates. Is there any point in doing this unless you're actively messing with gg?

>> No.3515901

>>3515896
GG usually wants to get in as strong state in your system as your system allows it. It may not install a driver on 9x, and if the user isn't admin it may not insist on running the driver either. I'm not sure what it does in Vista or Win7, but I can't imagine it would be stable - Microsoft banned their "rootkit" ways of hooking into kernel code, it's still possible, but you have to go through more hoops than they could afford. In general, the driver is likely the cause of many crashes - if the driver remains active and an application isn't hooked by it in usermode, it can easily trigger a BSoD as it thinks your application bypassed its hooks.

> Although I've been getting a feeling lately that if gameguard fails to read even a single process it will close itself after a few minutes. It's just a theory but lately it's been getting more and more plausible.
It actually tries to read more than just processes, it reads all the drivers, scans DLLs in other processes for hooks and many other things. It normally fails reading the memory of some system processes, so I don't think it would cause many troubles. Antiviruses/security solutions often use same tricks as gg, so hooks may conflict here causing crashes.

>> No.3515907

>>3515901

> If that truly is the case, is there a way to prevent gameguard from knowing the processes are there altogether, or would we have to turn the entire OS's processes into a full-fledged rootkit to evade it?
Yes and yes. There's many ways, but they require either advanced reverse engineering skills, or me disclosing weaknesses in their system, which I don't really want to do now. Turning your OS into a rootkit may be a simpler way, but be very careful how you do it, as some hooks may conflict. One of those rootkits that hook in kernel-mode and deeper than SSDT (maybe sysenter or modifying some kernel data structures directly would work). There's some well-known methods popular in MMO hacking script-kiddie forums, but I'm not aware of them much, as I don't frequent them.

A simple solution would involve playing the game in a VM, but with them using TheMida, that may not be possible unless you patch your VM to be more stealthy to avoid detection. This may also be slow. The other solutions I can think of are a tad on the advanced side. If the game runs with limited priviledges, that may be another solution, as long as they allowed it in the ini file.

Random question to MMO players annoyed by gg's crappyness: If someone offered a cheap commercial gg-away(which removes it entirely) product for a cheap price/monthly subscription (since it has to deal with frequent updates), would you be interested in paying for it? It's probably a stupid question, as people on /jp/ probably have better things to spend their money on, but I think making such an application would be too much effort to keep constantly updated for anyone to bother working on it for free.

It is possible to stop gameguard. You don't even need to remove it from your system.

All you need is a custom game executable that doesn't launch it in the first place. This requires someone with some excellent assembly skills to decompile the game exe and craft a new one, minus the gameguard launch and check code.

There's a fixed no-gameguard executable for Aion (built for american release before ncsoft came to their senses and axed the pos) that is a small collection of files that are simply drop-in replacements for the official files. Poof! No more gameguard.

We just need someone with the proper skills to do it.

That doesn't work if the game has server-side check for it. It only works in less than 50% of the games where the developers were too lazy to implement it.

Protip: Don't install games that run this malware "gameguard" shit on your computer.

Server side checks? Damn, does gameguard really phone the server to say that it's running?

Well even if that is the case is should be possible to reproduce whatever gamegaurd is sending. But, depending on their validation scheme, that could make the project an impossibly large task.

Would runup have really implemented this though? It is runup, lazy and worthless.

Server sends normal game packet which contains an encoded gg request, and the game client can handle that packet and send it back to the gg lib which sends it to gamemon.

> Well even if that is the case is should be possible to reproduce whatever gamegaurd is sending. But, depending on their validation scheme, that could make the project an impossibly large task.

Validation scheme is complex, but not impossible (500 requests, each request's code is encrypted with a runtime key which is contained in the request from the server. The request id changes daily, so it's designed to be impossible to completly figure out, well it should be impossible if not for their oversights.) . Better solutions just mean running their code dynamically in a safe environment and have it do all the hard work for you - there's no way they can stop this.

I don't know, someone go get the game executable/dlls, unpack it, and check if they implemented this. I could easily do it, but I'm not going to be around for the rest of the day. Or you could just disable it and see if the game server disconnects you after 5-10 minutes (default timeout value for request).

There were some being sold by Cafe Madonna earlier, but I don't know about now. Someone's probably selling them outside the north or south city gates.

Out of curiosity, do any of the other ECO distributions around the world use gameguard? Does the original japanese version?

Run Up is just a licensee, they cant do any significant changes to the game code. It has to be fully compatible with the future japanese patches coming down the chain.

I'm really surprised that they were able to add gameguard. I thought the limit of their access was "translating" text and repacking dat files to be sent with the client.

My goal has always been a complete disabling of gameguard and, in case the server required authentication, an emulation of it's encrypted identifications. Just because I hate it's security compromising nature that casts illusions of security upon a laid bare code.

As for the gg-away tool you are thinking off, although a great idea in theory, if you go commercial you're facing lawsuits from INCA and I don't think they would stop short regardless of your conditions.
The best bet there, even though support could be questionable, would be a free development through GPL, you could even mask it as something else instead of advertising it like a gg remove tool, "Intrusive Rootkit Shield" would have a nice ring to it, and if required the gg emulator could even come as an unofficial underground plugin. The long term effects it would have are pretty much two choices, either gameguard gets defeated for good or it tightens it's already disgusting level of control which would only lead to more complains from the userbase. Either way their future would be certain doom and it would force programmers to start moving to other choices or finally get some motivation to program stronger codes.

Anyways, Thanks for the heads up on the info.

As of the latest patch, 1.90.9.10, the server won't let you login if it can't verify gameguard running on your machine. It also disconnects you after around 2m if you severly hamper gameguard's checks.

JP's server uses browser identification to start the client, no gameguard at all. Can't recall the other versions.

Yes, there's many possibilities. As for the lawsuits, if anyone digs deep into gg, they'll find many kinds of illegal practices, so many that a counter-suit could be filed if they decide to file one, except that they're based in South Korea and someone doing such a tool would be likely placed in a country with more liberal reverse engineering laws (speaking of which: gg doesn't come with an EULA, and last I checked, it doesn't warn the user of all the intrusive crap they're doing). The whole commercial idea was hypothethical anyways.
