does /jp/ know what's the best way to learn japanese without taking a formal class? Because formal japanese classes aren't available here.

yes the best way is to read and learn what you are taught be your betters

Lesson 1.
俺は猫です
{ore wa neko des}

I am a cat

for an accurate feeling on how to pronounce this watch all movies with Mifune Toshiro.

The end of Lesson 1

Either look up the kabillion Japanese learning sites on the internet and see what you pick up, or buy a couple books (they usually approach the basics quite differently and might complement each other) and see what works best for you.
I really wouldn't recommend Rosetta Stone as a main learning tool. It *works*, but it stubbornly refuses to provide any insights into the language, its quirks or origins, when an occasional, simple explanation could improve the learning process immensely.

(do these first two in the order you like, or at the same time, whatever)

1. Read Tae Kim or some beginner's textbook (or both) for the very basics. DITCH TEXTBOOKS AS SOON AS YOU CAN.

2. Learn the 2042 Remembering the Kanji Vol 1 Kanji. USE AN SRS FLASHCARD PROGRAM LIKE ANKI and get that shit done in 50-60 days. Keep testing afterwards though.

3. Expose yourself to vocabulary and grammar through context. I use the smart.fm sentences to test my reading and passively gain vocabulary and grammar knowledge. Again, USE AN SRS FLASHCARD PROGRAM. Repeat forever.

Some useful stuff that gets posted over and over again in Japanese language threads:

Genki books
AJATT (www.alljapaneseallthetime.com)
Tae Kim's Guide to Japanese(www.guidetojapanese.org)
Heisig's RTK (book 1 & 3)
Anki (something to SRS with)
immerse yourself in the language (animu/VNs/J-drama/mango/etc)

And I think that's about all. Or I can't remember any of the other shit (excluding Rosetta), but these sites/books/etc will help.

OP here. Thanks a lot, this should get me started.
idk about rosetta, though... Is it that good? I only had the beginner classes, though, maybe that's why I learned reaaaally slow... It was jut repeating stuff I already knew... (kanas mostly)
