Let's Play!

http://www.tenhou.net/0/?L7447

For beginners
Everything you need to know about tenhou itself can be found here http://arcturus.su/tenhou/

Explanations for the tiles, rules, scoring etc can be found here:

Hand Calculator: http://no-info.no-ip.info:6224/mj/mahjong.html

Please read 2-3 sites before playing and even then try the singleplayer games first.
Playing without knowing what you do is not only frustrating for yourself but also for your opponents, a player that left because he couldn't ron for his no Yaku hand or because someone ron'd his discard just kills the whole fun for everyone.

Usually, a game lasts around 30 minutes, so please, if you're not going to stay until the end, respect the other players and don't join a new game.

Also keep in mind that Mahjong is more a game of "not losing" than straightforward winning.
Furthermore you play with 3 other people and luck plays a big part in it, so don't expect to win more than 1 out 4 games, especially not as a beginner.

If you read some of the linked sites and still have questions feel free to ask.

>> No.3496036

From the old thread, just in case the questioner couldn't read it.

>I need to learn to read peoples hands better. Fuck I keep dealing risky tiles. The only way I know a tile is safe is if A. the other 3 are in the pond already or B. the tile in question is in his or her pond.
>I pretty much never deal tiles where no other of its kind have been dealt, but I still get ron'd.
>How does I read discards?

>>3496036

It's pretty useless reading that stuff at this level because people go for very odd waits all the time. Meaning, once they see they can Riichi, they WILL Riichi and then start looking at what tile the discard.

Generally the pond is a good way to check, not dealing live tiles, and not dealing tiles near the Riichi tile (the last one may work or fail completely).

>> No.3496632

>>3496416
This.

90% of all the riichis in 7447 are closed/edge/pair waits, with hell waits being a large percentage. Depends on the level of your opponent though, you just have to keep playing to get a good idea of what kind of riichi's he's pulling.

While I admit that my grandpa is pretty good, I don't think it quite applies to his friends.

I do hear one of them try to cheat however since they don't have automatic tables...5 cents a regular hand (not riichi mahjong obviously) is a pretty big deal when you're retired and doing nothing but mahjong.
