You get Level 1 books from fights, dungeons and levies.
And few characters need them (as in, worthwhile to get them to 6 and FUTHER upgrade).
The only one that you should TRULY bother is Rance and filling up stats of Units like Teru.
If you can't get enough books for a couple units after some conquering, you do something wrong.

I have conquered 6 provinces now...still not enough books from levies. Especially since speed books are so rare, and speed is important on footmen so they can use guard before the starting one is taken down.

Maeda needs 2 speed books preferably, speed 4 is too slow.

Kazemaru now needs 3 attack books, and preferably some speed ones.

I've never used it on monsters, but with 500 troops and 6 Int it still did about 200 damage on regular opponents.
With 1000 troops and the triple damage factor it should be doing something about 1000 damage on monsters.
I know it's not a mistranslation issue this time (I've been told the demon-only chisel is actually tuned to youkai, not demons) because I've tried it on youkai and it did normal damage. It should really do triple damage against monsters.

Go for the 3rd action fan ASAP (you need to reach 50 Satisfaction).
Breaking the 5th gourd will cause you to enter the game's 2nd half, and there will be a hard dungeon-style battle involved when you do.
Countries generally don't declare war on you unless you're not at war. If you declare war on a country the same turn that you conquer them, you can "control" which countries you fight.

Tip 1: Try to not be in war with many countries. If you are, focus on one quickly. Also, do not senselessly raise troop count, since the opponent scales. Finally, do not rely too much on generic commanders, since you will capture better ones.
And whenever a 'Satisfaction bonus' option comes out, ask for reinforcements.

In the Satisfaction bonus page, there is a '+3 affection to everyone' option. Also, Items raise it.
Also, commanders get affection points randomly at battlers or at the start of the turn.
Only manually raise it when they are near 7.
Or if you have items and use one on a commander , and again get him near 7.

Don't bother until later on in the game. You'll just get them slowly but naturally if you use the unit. Also when you run out of decent options for satisfaction bonuses you can select the affection bonus which gives +3 to every unit you have. Just concentrate on conquering and getting some non-generic decent units at the start.

I admit I mostly used Senhime as a tank rather than a guard - point a souped up Senhime (who you CAN soup up because footsoldiers don't count towards your troop count for enemy scaling purposes) at an enemy you want to obliterate, spear attack 2, problem solved. You can nuke nearly anything this way.

Since Ashigaru don't seem to count for enemy scaling, I once considered using *only* them.
Your offense would suffer somewhat but you'd be able to buy insane amounts of troops for cheap without increasing your opponents' troops at all, and you'd never lack for tanks.
I think I'm gonna do it for fun eventually. I'll need to use mostly generics since unique Ashigaru are so rare, but I bet it'd be surprisingly effective.

Youkai in average are much more powerful than humans, very resistent to death (since they're not alive in the first place) and they have no soul.

They can physically step outside JAPAN, but without supply of the youki, they will soon perish from starvation.

If a youkai grabs a piece of Orochi though, they can travel around by feeding on the youki from it.

I got a slight problem. I bought the game, installed with the english patch, and now when i start it up it shows one screen, then fades to black and you can only hear the music. :( I would ask elsewhere, but my moonspeakfu is rather weak.

Maybe. My system will show japanese characters for file names, usually, but not every time. (the patch files for example, are complete gibberish.)

Make sure you have complete Japanese language support, and either use AppLocale or change your computer's settings to Japanese/Japan.
I don't think I've ever seen a Japanese game I couldn't run and I've never had to do anything more than that.

Takes quite a while for the option to appear. There's probably some other requirement too, like winning a troop battle while Kenshin and Baba are present (just a guess, it might be anything like that).
With permits you should be able to hold out. Get some more satisfaction, then use Pokkuru and everything else you can on her... he's freakishly powerful, even if you're the same level as him.

It's surprisingly long, maybe 5 minutes. And far as I know you can't skip it.
But it only plays once after you've installed the game. It could be worth waiting to see if you can access the menu afterwards, then you'd be able to play the game without any problems in the future.

Many, many ways.
Even brute force can work.
9 attack with Attack Buff Rance at 900 units takes out 500 of him. Nowhere near impossible.
Muskets,Maria, penetrate attacks (like White Destruction), using Natori, Poison, Uesugi+uruza combo etc
Also, you can deploy footmen and hope he uses Commander Charge right away, which makes winning via battle rating easy.

They always have all four buffs, it's the passive ability of all 4 Takeda generals. You can use a Tactician or Goninja to remove them.
Other than that... you don't really need to defeat their unit. You just have to win the battle. I realize it's not easy, but doable. Diviners might help, since a Shikigami guard will nullify any attack no matter how strong (note that Commander Charge will destroy it and still have a troop attack get through, though, so Baba is dangerous even then).

Regardless, for both Baba and Yamagata, you either used Huge damage Combo (Natori+Maria+Muskets) or Action Waste combo.
The others are easy to win, as long as you deploy 6 decent units each with normal numbers, nigh impossible to lose due battle rating. The actual challenge of the blitz is no permanent deaths rather than failing to defend properly.

True history is a very suboptimal route to be trying to get points in. The Ran route is probably the best route if you want to rack up a lot of points, also one or two star difficulty.

I slapped the Endgame Points ability on everyone, visited the Carnival four times, cleared 8 characters, managed 30k troops... I had to have Alice weaken the final boss once, but I finished at 91 turns and ended up with 42 bonus points to spend.
I'd recommend either going for points all the way, or going for power and farming points in a 2nd game.
As it's often been said, Ran route is easy. You could do one run to get points, do another route to mix things up, do a 1 or 2-Star Ran run for points, another route, etc.
As long as you don't get bored.

One star Ran route is best for getting points. Start off with the additional action fan bonus plus others like popularity staff or Rance's Love if you have the points. I managed to end with a score of 69 after character clears, 30000 troops and such on my Ran playthrough.

Use some satisfaction bonuses to increase affection and also aim to clear some of the easier characters (I had at least 20 or so characters cleared). Visit the carnival every opportunity you get. I wouldn't recommend any other objectives as they take a bit longer to accomplish.

You can probably manage a higher score if you do the route again by starting off with Dokuganryu and Houjou family bonuses (with Dokuganryu alone you can take Ashikaga by turn 6 and at least 3-4 more countries including Tokugawa by turn 15 if you do minimal purple events).

Starting over will do you little good, just finish it and spend the 5 points good.
Beating it once will open up other routes, and some of them are much more suited to run for points than the True History Route.

By that point you should have at least 2 groups of commanders. Spend one action fan attacking with one group, preferably abusing assassinate/whirlwind shot for quick kills on units that cause the most trouble. Now you can either clear a dungeon or get some satisfaction during your other 1-2 action fans then use the second group to defend from the attack at the end of the round. It's slow but it works and it allows you to build a lot of money since you wont be spending as much as you would by attacking constantly. Keeping yourself above 50k with asset tech will mean you get the most out of it and every little helps.

Well you seem to be in a good position to defend, just defend and buff up your army with levys, SAT bonuses, dungeons, w/e.

Also you need 50k in the bank to get full use the asset tech skill.

And if you have multiple characters with Asset Tech, the ability stacks. The 2000 max still applies, but you need to keep less money to gain the benefits. With two characters, you only need to keep 25k to get the full 2000.

There's an item from the Purupet shop that adds +5000 troops. It also reduces all stats by 2, so Baba is a decent choice because he goes from 6/6/6/6 to 4/4/4/4 and you can just bump him back to 6s with ordinary books.
It's not as good as it sounds though. Enemy troops scale based on your own, so you're also making them stronger.

Depends. If you want to boost points from completing routes, any of the other routes are fine. If you want 3rd action fan at start, you should probably just redo the True route at 1 star difficulty since you already have an idea how it goes. If you have enough points for 3rd action fan and kill monkey option, I'd recommend a Kill Monkey route to accumulate more points/house bonuses for future runs, seeing as you can only get One-Eye house (pretty powerful but enjoy high NP cost commanders with few search/neg/const options that you can't have affection conversations with later than all of the other houses). Good houses to go for are Mori and Takeda, though Takeda is pretty damn expensive with 40 points compared to the 20 for other houses, but you can't chara clear all of Mori house and you also lose one of them later in most routes.

Anyone else feel the routes are too rushed? I find i cant enjoy the game much because im too busy rushing to conquer other countries in the routes before something fucks me over...

E.g. In the kenshin route you need to rush to level kenshin up ASAP and finish the race or xavier will start killing participants, and the entire time you are fighting 2-3 countries minimum thanks to keikoku...so theres no time to do stuff like search for treasure or explore dungeons.

Not dramatically 'easier', but it is shorter and needs no special preptime.
As long as you start the route, just conquer a bit to progress events, fight a a dozen easy commander battles (ogres), and the final boss is more annoying then hard.
Also, lacks Soul Binder and infected and need to heavily upgrade Rance and Kentarou(since you do not fight a demon).

Theres a strategy to beat the demon king route, you just need to not fight miki at all. Dont even bother defending, use battle permits to take provinces and wait until the demon army attacks without miki, then you beat their attacking force and attack the castle which doesnt have miki defending.

You can also use covert action to get close to a castle without them taking anything back with miki.

Leave the dungeon on the second to last floor, start anew, and get a couple diviners to guard the big guns and monks to replenish them.

I played Real History route but destroyed the Demon Army and won the bridge fight before Miki disappeared (never bothered giving her hirami lemons) and Sill got frozen. I actually used Sill in the final battle.

Honestly, I thought Gunagan was way harder than Orochi since you don't get your actions refilled before fighting him. Orochi really isn't that bad as long as you know that your starting 6 characters will be killed before they can take a turn (so you send in the cannon fodder first) and you have some hard hitting ranged attacks to take out the Orochi Girls on the back row. When I did Orochi, I beat him without breaking a sweat. Gunagan, on the other hand, I just barely squeaked past with just a handful of characters still alive.
