The game made it pretty clear as it was the story of Taichi and him only, and his story could only end this way.
And it's not philosophical babble, that's just how the story is.

Considering how many people raved at the ending I was severely disappointed. I wasnt even impressed. By the time I got to the end I was glad the story was over.
