You said Refold doesn't work, but you are basically doing Refold. Watching anime with subs is not the "Phantom Madman Method". Literally Refold has you watching anime with subs early on. I guess you think Refold doesn't work because of your "correct way" to learn Kanji. If Matt really thought doing all of RTK was the best way he wouldn't have said its a waste of time and recommend people do RRTK or JP1K.
Refold is just sentencing mining and immersion basically. Its just a way to do immerse learning. Migaku is just software to help with making sentence mining easier. Migaku is not a method. They don't have any detailed guides on how to learn any languages currently. Even when they create one its going to be basically the same. All of these methods aren't that much different at this point. DJT, The Moe Way, Refold, etc. Its just immersing and mining. It doesn't matter what method it is as long as you just immerse.
You shouldn't act like you're some sort of expert when you still use the easy button on Anki and put the story on the front of your card for RTK. There is plenty of information on the internet about how to use Anki, sentence mining and how to do immersion learning. I don't know why you think an Anki premade deck helped you more than immersion. If thats the case you need to do more immersion. You aren't going to get "fluent" doing premade decks.
Focus more on immersion and less on Anki. You don't need to do all of RTK to learn kanji "the right way". Go read a VN or something.

I’m just gonna call it out. Japanese language learning circles are extremely elitist, if not downright hostile. I literally do not see such hostility in Spanish, French, Russian, Italian, German, ANY other language learning communities. It’s only with Japanese. You can even see it in this sub, which is why I don’t do much more than lurk here.

It’s like foreigners are trying to out do each other with how serious they are about learning Japanese. So many people are out here trying to prove they aren’t one of those weebs who want to learn Japanese because of anime or manga. But see the thing is, the Japanese learner who wants to learn the language to play games or or watch their favorite shows without subtitles or understand the lyrics to their favorite songs are just as valid as the ones who are shooting for N1 or trying to find employment in Japan.

Anime is one of Japan’s most famous cultural exports, of course it’s gonna be the top reason why people start learning Japanese. Like?? Those who started learning Japanese for some other reason not related to Japanese pop culture are in the minority, let’s not play dumb. And there is absolutely nothing wrong with that. Non-Japanese people gatekeeping what makes a “true” Japanese learner is actually so ridiculous to me.

And on another note, the way beginners/casual learners of Japanese are essentially talked down to and cast aside is so embarrassing to me as a Japanese learner, to be completely honest.

I’ve been wanting to refer my younger cousin to some online Japanese learning communities since he very recently became excited to learn Japanese after watching BNHA, but oh my God, the stuff I see on this very subreddit and other places is so fucking discouraging and I would hate for him to lose that excitement because he feels his reason for learning isn’t “good enough.”

I don’t know if it’s because the miserable, jaded expats in /r/JapanLife also frequent this sub just to downvote people, but I’m not even exaggerating when I say this sub can be such an unwelcoming place (particularly for beginners), and I really wish it wasn’t that way.
