I finally watched that one matt dudes videos and now I feel a big scary sense of regret, in terms of how i have abused anki over the last two or so years... (I took a break cause i was exhausted for the past 5 months)

I have only used vocab cards for about 4~5 years and i think i have been adding words with no context (other than the auto appended totoeba app sentences) and doing that whole "oh i know this card's answer cause ive seen it before" rather than "I know what this word means and how it can be used".

How many of you have dropped anki before? should I just restart? give up all those stupid fucking words i havent actually learned?

I have already used the retirement add-on but it still requires me to go through like 2000 cards just to get them all to be retired... and i find tons of cards that i cant even begin to remember why i have them).

I started learning Japanese back in 2019. I could probably easily pass the vocabulary section of the N1 test, but not the grammar section.

I don't think Full Listening Immersion works from a 0% Beginner Level. I FINALLY put on a Japanese news show on YouTube as I was on a 15 minute walk today. I did Audio-only through my earphones. If I had not had any prior knowledge of Japanese vocabulary, I think it would've been a huge waste of time. If I had no prior knowledge of vocabulary, I would've only picked up the phrases "Corona" and "Golden Week" (remember, I was doing Audio-only).

Furthermore, I found that I stopped listening mid-sentence as I was trying to decipher how much of a sentence I actually comprehended (20%, 40%, etc.). I feel that it would have been a much better use of my time if I would be able to pause the video and look up the definition of the 3-4 words of a sentence that I didn't understand, instead of just continuing to listen to the sentence (if I was a true beginner from 0% then I wouldn't have understood any of the words). This however would have turned it from "passive listening" into "active listening", right?

I guess the reason I created this thread was to see if you guys agree with me or not. I don't want anybody to waste their time. If somebody were to tell me to do nothing with a textbook or other source of Japanese learning, and to just listen to these odd sounds for one month before actually studying anything, I don't think that it would work (I guess it could potentially work if there were images included though.).

Bonus info: The audio that I was listening to used the word "kuraberu" many times. Even though I heard that word many times, since it was audio only, I wouldn't have any idea what was being talked about unless I actually looked up that words definition.

Funny story, they actually found this out during WW2. They tried audio learning for alien soldiers to try and learn Japanese and German to understand communications. 8/10 could learn German but only about 1/10 could learn Japanese simply by listening to tapes. This has been linked to German unlike Japanese being a phonetic language. Essentially it's easier to associate the sounds with words.

so i have been studying japanese for about a year now. first i took classes but due to covid i switched to private one on one lessons with my native japanese teacher. i really love the language (i know this isn’t enough to actually learn it) but i feel i am losing motivation as i have the feeling i am not improving anymore.

the main reason i think why i am struggling is because i can not find a proper study rhythm, especially for grammar. i am working through the textbook, doing the exercises but it feels like i am losing what i have learnt as soon as i turn the page.

I was taking a break from Japanese and decided to hop onto a discord call with a couple friends.

For context I've been watching between 7-10 hours a day of mostly anime/native content for input immersion, and I've been studying in general for 3.5 years. Nethertheless, I got told by Person 1 I should be spending my time better, and in a more "productive" manner, and then he continued to question that if I didn't spend all this time watching anime, would it make a big difference in my language ability. At this point I'm already a bit triggered, and frankly kind of hurt. To rub it in a bit more Person 2 joins in and talks about how I should aquire the language by moving to the country, and start "living" the language, which is clearly not as easy as it sounds especially since you have to be able to fully fund a trip to Japan, and consider living expenses. While I thought the whole point of immersion in my target language was to create a similar environment to the living in the language, I guess his only acceptable answer was to "move to the country for 2 years, otherwise you're just wasting your time". At this point I was done with this discussion, and decided to just uninstall Discord out of fustration. I think the thing that gets to me the most is that they both haven't spent time trying to reach fluency in a second language, although they are able to speak a second language, they still haven't done any purposeful studying towards their secondary language, and yet they are telling me how I should learn a language in a way that feels like I have been doing everything wrong.

With that out of the way, have you guys dealt with a similiar situation, and how did you deal with it? I'm currently feeling demotivated, and it's causing me to question my methods of learning, even though I know people have clearly succeeded with it (Matt vs Japan). I really have no close friends to reach out to talk about this, so my only option is to reach out to y'all for feedback.Thanks for taking the time to read all of this :)

I mean, imo, you can't get the proficiency of your target language just by living in that country, especially country like Japan where you can have comfy lifestyle without speaking/knowing even single word of Japanese if you speak English.
But definitely you need native speakers as your conversation partners to get fluency. And It's regrettable that you hung out in discord with those who were interested only in criticizing you, but actual native speakers willing to talk with you.
