naturally OCR tools have some issues with reading text on messy backgrounds, but if the image's contrast was increased, they can usually get it mostly correct. This is what Kaku does on android. Anyone know a good way to do a similar thing on linux? I have the tools that the tatsumoto guide suggest and it works good enough but only in the most ideal situations.

Anyone have problems reading because of pitch accent? I used to avoid reading in Japanese because the voice in my head didn't know how to 'read' the sentences aloud (because of the accent / intonation). I had a similar problem while acquiring English as a child, and avoid reading things in Mandarin now as a beginner.

My intuition tells me that this is a common problem to have, but the evidence seems to say otherwise. I've never heard of anyone having this problem in Japanese, and people around the world seem to feel fine reading English with their native phonology. Speaking from personal experience, same story with Chinese.

I can do it - I pushed through reading French in school for 6 years - but I wouldn't do it given a choice. It feels like eating with the wrong hand or trying to walk with my legs and arms synchronized. It's still unintuitive for me that reading - even without audio - is recommended early on, although I know how effective it can be.

Is this something a lot of people experience, but rarely talk about? Has anyone reading felt the same way?

(Possibly relevant notes: I passed N1 a while ago. I speak Japanese just fine, and sporadically have times when I need to use it a lot. I can thoroughly enjoy visual novel-style games. I only learned to read as a child around the age of 6.)

TL;DR: I hate reading before I have a good handle on the phonology. This includes pitch accent for Japanese. Feels like eating slippery noodles with a fork. Anyone felt the same way?

Edit: I love audiobooks. I've loved them since I was intermediate. I've gone through many of them. Just wish they were a bit cheaper on Audible.

What are your thoughts on "Memorization is the lowest form of learning?" My fellow classmates often say something along the lines of this quote when they need to study for subjects or lessons that require memorization. Even some of my teachers say this. I'd easily agree with them back when I wasn't learning Japanese. Now that I am learning a foreign language and using Anki, I've come to realize that memorization is very important in the process of learning. It's true according to Bloom's taxonomy that memorization is the lowest form of learning but I still think it is an important part of learning. What do you guys think?
