Sorry for asking to be spoon fed, I'd like some guidance on how to create your own player models for MTA. I believe some anons have made some for the server, and I've been thinking about giving it a try too, but I'm not really sure how to go about it.
Perhaps there's an add-on for a modeling program to convert existing models into the correct file types? What limitations in file size, polygon count, texture resolution etc. would need to be considered? How would I import the models into the game to test them out?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

It's what I use to import / export models. Though there is a caveat with this tool. You can only open exported models with this tools and blender. If you try to open exported models for gtasa in 3dsmax for example, you will get an error or it will not import correctly.

And that's a wrap! It being the two year anniversary probably calls for some grand old speech, but I'm just about ready to keel over so I'll spare the soapy sentimentality.

Two years ago I thought I'd only be working on this server for a few weeks for maybe 4-5 anons. Two years later I'm somehow still the host, and we top off around 20-30 anons! Good times and bad, I've enjoyed my time working on this server and can hopefully continue to add more silly and fun things for a long time to come. Thank you all for playing and helping out in the server's development over all this time, even sticking through it during the times it was barely playable.

I'm not sure if any other anons were recording, but if anybody who missed it was curious about it, I can upload this year's anniversary ending later.

I'm not exactly Joe Modeler here but I've been working on optimizing our vehicle models so we can have some of them back on the server. Most of the spawn vehicles and their textures have been brought down to ~1 MB with barely any discernible difference in their topology. I'll probably prioritize the next week or two to finishing them up, they're long overdue. Only 88 to go.

That would be a lot of work, with the script I mentioned only the vehicle models close to the player are loaded, and once they are out of range they are streamed out of memory, it might be much better for performance than the normal modloader method that loads all vehicle models to memory at once, if it works out you won't need to spend all that effort optimizing the dff files.

Not him but how well is the script? I think the only concern would be stuttering/fps drops when it tries to stream in textures. I dont know how GTA/MTA handles texture streaming but it takes a good 10 seconds to load into spawn with car skins disabled. Arguably theres tons of textures at spawn but what will happen when you approach a group of people or in a race? etc.

It's a lot of work, sure, but it's gotta be done sooner or later. Problem is even if you unload the models via script, you're still gonna have the same issue loop right back around for anons on low-end PCs if there are a lot of congregated players and models in one spot, especially somewhere like the Gensokyo and Tokyo maps. And of course there are performance concerns for the client as well since a script like that will need to always be running and introduce potential features.

It's just an issue with how MTA handles engineload functions, while 90% of servers wouldn't notice anything with a few replaced models here and there, nearly everything is replaced due to the nature of the server and thus the issues present with custom models are more, well, present. On the bright side once it's done it'll be easier to stay on top of, and optimizing our models is a good practice nonetheless; it should slightly improve performance in some areas and lower DL times. There's definitely no reason for there to be vehicles that are ~20 MB each rolling around if they can be reduced to a fraction of that.

Cute images anon, thank you very much for keeping the thread alive. The GTA server will be up tomorrow, Saturday the 1st at about 7 or 8 AM EST - that's the morning!

Changes this week include the start of reintroducing custom vehicle models that have been optimized to 1 MB as mentioned previously. With any luck, my changes will allow custom vehicles without compromising the (relatively) low crash-rate. Additionally, the script provided by anon last week has been fixed; the moon zone will now sync players, and the SDM rocket will now return back to earth on it's own a few seconds after launching. Rocket technology sure is something in Gensokyo!

Also, the cinema is fixed until YouTube decides to screw me again. Videos should now be properly centered and will play without the annoying pop-up that was freezing them before.

Sure anon. I made a throw away github account just to get it. I've seen some images of other models of the UM Demo trio, but none are public I can find.
Though maybe I'm looking hard enough, I don't really follow the MMD scene all that much honestly.

Some authors require you to log on to bowlroll to download their model (logging on via twitter, facebook, or github). This isn't always necessary.
They sometimes have passwords too, but can be solved if your Japanese and your google/internet-fu is semi decent.

Speaking of MMD. Perhaps this isn't the best place to ask, but I've been looking for a model that isn't available to download from the authour anymore. If anyone here has the model I'd love if you could upload it for me, or point me in the direction to find it. I'd much rather avoid needing to use broken machine translation to attempt in contacting the authour if possible. It should be noted that the creator does have another version available from their twitter, however I'd looking for this version specifically.

I asked a few of my Japanese MMD acquaintances and not a single one of them would share it, they're too worried about breaking the redistribution rule. If you haven't already, try asking the /e/ MMD thread; the anons there usually have some pretty hard-to-find models. Failing that there's the author himself, though it doesn't look like there's any easy way to get in contact with him.

You'd think it'd be easy to find a model downloaded nearly 12,000 times, but the MMD community is weird in how difficult the models themselves can be to get. It's basically an entire thing in itself.

The next time the GTA server will be up is tomorrow, Sunday, at around 7 or 8 PM EST. Don't look forward to it!

How about something a little bit different this week? It's not much, but I've been fiddling with an MMO-style thing set in the apocalypse. It's about as jank as you'd expect but there's a lot of cool features, like quests, and there's even NPC factions who'll fight each other, and that you can join. It'll be just a one-off thing like STALKER last year, but it might be fun. Figure it's good to shake you guys up once in a while.

Also, based on a suggestion I've re-added RPGs, HRPGs, snipers and some other weapons you never really see used much back to the overworld map, but with a catch - their spawn points are completely randomized, and change every few minutes so they can't be camped. I've added about 50 new spawn points, dunno if they'll get used much but the increased weapon variety and random element of it might provide some amusement.

Also considering readding hydras at least via this method too, not super sure about it but I would like to reimplement them in some manner eventually. Same with rhinos, though those are so flagrantly OP I don't really know how to balance them without some kind of handicap like making them cost money every minute of use, for example.

I've also had a go at making a custom playermodel. It could use some more work, but I'm satisfied for now.
There's not much optimization right now, however I hope it can be tested on the server nonetheless.
Whether it should replace the existing skin is down to the admin, yet I'm not so sure about it. Having them both available would help me to compare the two in game.

While I hate to bring this up, this is the third time this month I've been questioned about releasing the server's source code to the point where it's frankly getting a bit uncomfortable now. Had I known it'd start becoming a nuisance I'd not have said anything at all. I'll make it clear - I've no intentions of abandoning the server. I like to take things at my own pace, and there's a lot to do, but I've certainly not given up on it. It's pretty much my own child so I'd like to see it finished just as much as the rest of you. Just because I don't feel like constantly hosting or working on it certainly doesn't entail having to start throwing around the idea I've quit or given up on it. Working on the server is fun for me, though time consuming, and I like seeing it evolve.

Ordinarily I bite my tongue on things like this, though a few blatant accusations I've been getting lately of quitting or rescinding my promise do put a bit of a chip on my shoulder. Unless I suddenly keel over one day you've my word the server's source will be released and that I'll continue working on it until that time.

You mean like a construction system? Sure can. Most of the stuff like DayZ, Dystopia as another anon mentioned and others all use a pretty simple method of it - by removing an objects collision, lowering the alpha and applying a shader to it, then attaching it to the front of the player you have a simple construction system that emulates object "preview" and placement.

Now if you take it a step further, you can use direction vectors to get all the sides on a model to create points that "snap" together different models if they're close enough, which creates a true building system which is closer to what you see in games like RUST. There's a bit of math involved in doing this though, so it's not a method you see much. This guy here did something similar:

Funnily enough that this should be brought up since I was fiddling around with making a MySQL based The Sims-style building system for playerhomes a few weeks ago. Still not super sold on the idea of player housing yet so it's not a high priority until I can think up actual uses for it. It was. Just remember that the obstacles, like barriers, are bound to the world and have a fixed position. Assuming it's the same in MTA.
Originally, I wanted to see if I could pull off a makeshift spaced armor to see if it would do anything. meaningful to the tank considering they nerfed it into the dirt and never touched it again. Explosions can still damage you simply from the blast radius, but what I wanted to figure out was if it would do anything to the tank since it technically is an indirect hit; you could survive an explosion even on the other side of a thin wall- or barrier. You could fire over and over and nothing would happen IIRC.
