Hi there,

I’ve been self studying Japanese for almost 10 years on and off. I can read hiragana and katakana and several kanji. I’ve been using Duolingo for a few years and currently have a streak of 225 days! Yay!

I’m looking for a study buddy and I’m based in California. I’m 37 and married to a Japanese man and have two children. I’m trying to help them be fluent in Japanese so trying to up my study game. I’ve never been good at languages so it’s a real struggle.

For example Heisig is useless if you just want to read manga and watch anime. The same with textbooks.
In business Japanese Heisig and textbooks are something you should really consider.
In academic Japanese you are required in addition to the 6k deck and mining to do 3k Heisig and all textbooks including advanced level textbooks.

The biggest problem is that as soon as you want to output, this guide is missing the textbooks and Heisig to output on a high level.

For example if textbooks are so shit and "immersion" is everything, then why are most unemployed people talking like they are in their first immersion month, even though they live for 18+ years in the country and know no other language?

Hey guys!

I know that literally no one asked, but I am feeling super reinvigorated to learn this language and it's all because of an accidental daytrip. Here's what happened:

While I'm learning this language to live in Japan for school, my brother is a pretty big weeb and loves everything Japan related. He's been getting into print manga lately so I decided to take him to LA to go to a Japanese bookstore in Little Tokyo. Despite being in a bit of a learning slump, it felt like a nice opportunity to go spend some quality time outside. What I didn't realize, however, was just how much my 14 months of self-study was going to do for me in the small part of LA.

Even from just entering the district, every sign's respective Japanese text was readable fairly easy for me. All of the Kana and Kanji came to me like second nature and it felt amazing to know that my reading practice had done some good. Getting into the bookshop, I could also read all of the titles and most of the descriptions of the books and manga.

After visiting the bookstore, we went to go get some ramen. Every single thing that needed to be communicated with the staff (ordering our food, requesting things like chopsticks and extra water, getting the check), I was able to say with only a stutter or two! I even had a small talk with the waitress and gave a compliment to the food and chef. Even though my speaking is easily my Achille's heel when it comes to my Japanese knowledge, I got the best compliment a Japanese learner can receive: no praise and being treated like a normal, Japanese speaking person.

In conclusion, the slump was rough as is every learning slump. I couldn't see any sort of real progress in my knowledge and it felt like I hit a block. However, being able to use what I have learned in a real world, practical setting is an incredible feeling that I wouldn't trade for anything. I can't wait to get back to studying and learning, I can't wait to go back later with the new knowledge I learn. Thank you for reading this long post about my excitement for going into town!
