I'm always amazed by Nasu's ability to write metric fucktons of text on short notice. He wrote KT's 10 dreams in one day each, a normal writer would require like a week for just one of them. It is also well-known how he went far overboard with FGO's storylines, for a mobile game (I remember how Babylonia took me an entire fucking day to read).

I can't relate to him at all, personally. When I was a kid in high school, I was more like Shirou - a somewhat dim guy ready to help anyone (although, unlike Shirou, I often required help myself too), somewhat obsessive and completely clueless about what I'm gonna do with my life (although the last part never really changed). I always hated self-important pricks who thought that they were above others, either thanks to money or status. The one thing about Shirou that I couldn't relate to when reading the novel (other than his physique, because I was rather scrawny) is how he acted friendly with Shinji. In my mind, saber is an individual which sacrificed everything in order to become the ruler that was needed to save the kingdom.
She sacrificed her emotions, her future, her desires, everything. All in the name of doing what she believed was necessary.
Saber destroyed herself in order to shape herself into what was needed, and even though she suffered, she beared the pain and the suffering in order to fulfill what she viewed as her duty.

On the other side Shirou is a man whom doesn't want to sacrifice anything, his ideology (as archer points out) is hypocritical and not realistic on how the world works.
He does things based on his emotions and what his dead-foster parent said, he is manipulated by his emotions, incapable of looking at himself honestly and admitting the truth that he is wrong, perhaps out of a misplaced sense of pride.
From the get go, Shirou is incapable of saving anyone, he can't even save himself, he is a weak frail man, and yet he insists on attempting to save everyone even though he is incapable.
