Traveling alone has made me much less comfortable with the idea of traveling to a place where I don't speak the language. But if by going to the countryside you meant the pilgrimage anon, that is me. And technically it is not like I live in the centre of Osaka. But you have to understand, Japan is highly standardized. Conbini and chain stores are the same everywhere. Especially the tourist cities are full of English menus, but technically you will probably be fine no matter where you go.
The problem of that anon complaining earlier is not really the language, is just that he is a giant social pussy. The language is just his excuse, or at best the last straw. But the reality in modern Japan that is a very bad excuse.
Of course while traveling I was able to actually have some nice conversations with people, got free food and bed, managed to learn why they shut down the Aizu camera, but it is not like he was going to interact that much with locals even if he knew Japanese.

The guy was just a random guy that picked me up while I was hitchhiking. He was the first person that picked me and was able to speak English and of course he wanted to practice. He was actually new in town, so still no friends or anything. His boss made him move there at least for the next 2 years. Next day he even drove me all the way from Niigata to Aizu, even though he had work in the afternoon.

Nice - I wish I bought some Aizu Railway souvenirs when I went. Yunokami is the comfiest station I've ever been to, with its smokey interior in an old fashioned building. One of the times I went there were swallows nesting under the roof arch leading out to the road. The young ones were in a line on the beam, working up the courage to start flying. It says to protect it from frost, so I kept it inside on my windowsill all winter. But it probably needed colder temps to set it for blooming in the Spring.
