going back to this discussion since it's pretty interesting. At this point in time, the rhythm kusoge market is really oversaturated as well. D4DJ is competing against, what, Project Sekai | LoveLive/LL All Stars | 22/7 | IdolM@ster | Bangdream all those being the kind of games that whales and hardcore fans will really stick with till either the servers ends or they quit playing music games altogether.

That leaves D4DJ with trying to attract people who don't already religiously play a rhythm game(normies), trying to steal the audience of their competition, or what's probably happening right now, where essentially Bushiroad is just double dipping into the Bandori market with D4DJ which isn't ideal at all, at least for long term growth(possibly even detrimental since it may burn out your current market).

Basically, D4DJ is doomed to mediocrity until it fizzles out, or they capture lightning in a bottle with their marketing

Looking at Kidani's tweet it kind of comes across as him being butthurt and defensive and punching down, instead of up, with the blogger he was addressing. And while being butthurt and defensive isn't news with him, it does make one wonder why he's spending so much time and effort dicking around on Twitter instead of working on issues that commentators and even Bushiroad's stakeholders have brought up before.

Poland, DHL.
I used cheaper methods before, but since I usually buy a lot of small stuff like CDs and books together the costs are more or less the same as EMS (or even cheaper), the difference being that it takes 2-3 days for the package to arrive instead of 1 week + dealing with the customs bullshit. I still use EMS for bigger items like gunpla or figures, DHL charges are crazy for big volume packages.

To be honest D4DJ seemed kinda like a niche thing from the start. A lot of the music we got out of it is great, sure, but the project doesn't have enough impact to break into mainstream. I mean, most of us probably wouldn't even care if we weren't into Bandori and Bushi seiyuus in the first place.

>> No.34137268

COVID seems to have messed up a lot of promotional and live plans. So it’s no surprise D4DJ hasn’t got off to be best start. When they get back to having proper lives again it may pick up more steam.
As you say it’s a saturated market now, so yeah not loosing money would be a “success”.

I think it's no secret at this point that D4DJ is an effort by Bushi to try and break into the wider international market, which is a pretty tough task since only Babymetal's ever succeeded in some measure on that front I think(?)

D4DJ's had the multiple youtube showings of their lives, some of their youtube content having subs, the friday night DJ shows. If covid never happened, i would expect that they'd already have had a live or two overseas, probably Singapore to test the waters

>I mean, most of us probably wouldn't even care if we weren't into Bandori and Bushi seiyuus in the first place.
Interesting you would say that; I skimmed the blog post that discussed "why D4DJ failed" and the overlap between D4DJ's cast and Bandori's was one of the causes which the blogger named. They put it in perspective when they said a third of the D4DJ cast have roles in both projects.

From an attention-attracting position, maybe you're right, people wouldn't care as much for D4DJ if they didn't recognize names associated with it, but from a profit standpoint, as the blogger noted, it dilutes the real-money-transaction whaling brought on by being a fan of cast members participating in two similar (enough) works. Or, in my words, not the blogger's, if you were a fan of Reo's and her characters were both on the featured banner in both games, would you conserve your limited funds and blow them all on one game's banner, or split them over both games and very possibly end up with nothing to show for it?

>> No.34138132

most games can't all be major hits, so it's actually the most common way for smaller titles to stay afloat/make a profit, by getting a smaller group of dedicated whales to cater to while everyone else is just an afterthought

Yeah, COVID probably messed things up too. I wonder how big are live concerts in terms of these franchises' publicity. I know I was initially brought in by seeing Roselia's performances and I still care much more about the IRL part than the anime for example. It still amazes me how the RAS part of the 6th Live and NO GIRL NO CRY didn't manage to sell out all the seats.

>>34137473
Well, I'm the wrong person to ask about whaling or gacha in general as I'd rather buy merch to support the franchise. But to answer your question in a kinda roundabout way, I'd probably split my funds and buy merch of both.

On the point about merch and income, the blog post questioned whether the audience that attended D4DJ live shows would translate to spending on the mobage, which to my mind is a valid concern. It feels as if the marketing side wanted to duplicate the Bandori model with D4DJ and double (triple?) dip with concert, merch, and game revenue, though the problem with the overlapping casts comes in. Sure, two cakes, and all that, but say if Aimi's (just an example, since she is essentially the "face" of both projects) roles were instead played by Aimi and another well-liked seiyuu. Fans of both actresses/characters would contribute to revenue for both projects, and Bandori's and D4DJ's reach would extend to 2 groups that might not necessarily overlap as much as fans of Aimi alone.

maybe Bushi's stinginess is also at play? Not completely sure if it applies here, but it's usually cheaper to give a person a raise for like 40-50% and double his responsibilities than it is to hire a completely new person and train them from the ground up for the same work. The only ostensible upside to casting the same people over and over again is familiarity with them, and building the Hibiki brand. Even the latter has exceptions like Haruki whose agency has no major ties to Hibiki and whose career was largely live-action acting before Starlight.

Is it fair to say that the whole problem with D4DJ is niche+double dipping, I don't know who technically owns Assault Lily but that feels like it's down very well with how much I see it around. The anime and the music for it especially seemed to pull lots of standard otaku types in. Revue Starlight is relatively new and has an all-star cast but the idea itself made it excellent too instead of just doing a girls-do-acting franchise

>> No.34141883

>>34141808
Assault Lily definitely hit a sweet spot, it works well to anyone from the average person who likes girls doing cute/cool stuff even if that stuff is fighting weird monsters that make pig noises, and to the smaller audiences like its doll/figure market. Revue, I find, was probably doing the right thing but I get the impression it's too "high" for a lot of the "standard" type to get into. I mean, you can throw around the premise of cute girls singing all you want but at the end of the day a lot are going to be turned off by the idea of theatre. I figure the mobage not exactly topping the charts kinda hurt it in some way too.

Hibiki was formed to support Mimo's voice acting career to begin with. Back in the day, Milky Holmes was Hibiki's and Bushiroad's flagship series, and even when it wasn't hugely popular yet it got a lot of resources (Milky Holmes went to London back when literally no one there knew or cared about them).

Somehow, in large part because of the main four's charisma, Milky Holmes managed to eventually gain a fanbase and success. I wouldn't be surprised if Kidani still believes Vanguard, D4DJ, etc will one day replicate its popularity and success if he just keeps throwing money at them.

It's one of the biggest TCGs in Japan, falling behind only YGO and Pokemon which are absolute monsters and has had anime airing pratically nonstop for about 10 years. Bushiroad's main business is in TCGs and collectibles after all, so of course Vanguard is their biggest flagship these days. And their staff actually seem to enjoy playing and developing Vanguard. Perhaps Weiss Schwarz would have been a better example. And I don't quite feel like going down the rabbit hole of looking up concrete stats about how profitable Vanguard is, which isn't the focus of this thread anyway.

I suppose the point being made is really that Milky Holmes eventually becoming somewhat successful as a multimedia 2.5D series might lead to higher-ups thinking they can do the same with other series, but Milky Holmes was always something special and much of what gave it its charm can't be replicated when times have changed.

Also not that anon, but since they mentioned Assault Lily I'm going to use it for comparison. The Starlight cast (at least when we don't factor in Starira, and even there we have exceptions like Nossan) was half voice actresses who went into live-action acting and the other half live-action actresses who went into voice acting. And then we have people like Moepi and Momoyo who technically are voice actresses but whose more memorable roles were in live action. Going way back to Starlight's original pitch, and looking at how it's described in the present, the live-action aspect and animated series were always intended to have equal weight, developing concurrently. I'd hesitate to call it an all-star cast, but being cast for Starlight (even for the mobage) came with the expectation of competency in both forms, and auditioning for it was with full knowledge of that expectation. When Kukugumi were assembled, those who were more experienced in one were paired up with those who were more experienced in the other (insert that picture of yankee Maho and fringeless gyaru Aiai here).

On the other hand, Assault Lily started out without expecting to become a multimedia series (the FAQ on the official blog from all those years back still states that), and Bushiroad only entered the picture relatively recently to produce merch, plan for LoG/TFG, back the anime, etc. The guy who wrote and directed the anime was in talks from 2017, and at that point there already was an partnership with the Ludvico Girls School cast that had two/three live action plays - some of them are still involved in the project now and many of them play Last Bullet, but the likelihood of any of them ever voicing their characters is pretty low. There are also conspiracy theorists who wonder if Rimi replacing the previous actress for Himari and the one-time addition of Tonopi to the Ludvico cast were due to Bushiroad's meddling, while the majority of LoG's and TFG's actresses also voice their characters in animated form. Back when TFG ran last year, Hitotsuyanagitai had a press conference/public address and Pi-chan was like "we're all voice actresses here" which I think shows the angle Bushiroad are taking; they want voice actresses who can do live-action acting over live-action actresses who can do voice acting. The Ludvico reruns this year also have Miyase Reina returning as Raimu, so they can easily call on her to voice Raimu in Last Bullet or the animated shorts if it comes to that, rather than prep an untrained newbie or one of Raimu's previous actresses, who both have no background in voice acting.

In either case, though, even if they aren't necessarily all-star casts, they are proficient enough at what they do, aren't they?

This is just speculation on my part.

The Ludvico actresses were in those roles before Assault Lily and later Bushiroad entered the picture, Nakamura Yukari was playing Fukuyama Sachie the horribly unlucky human teenage girl before she was Fukuyama Jeanne Sachie the Lily with a superweapon in each hand. The characters were AU-ed and reimagined in the Assault Lily setting, while Hitotsuyanagitai, although created earlier than the Ludvico characters, were cast later. When Bushiroad had a bigger/active say in things, they placed their own voice talents (Rimi, TonoTsumu) or people who appeared in their other works (Haruki, Chinharu, Maho) in LoG/TFG, or encouraged them to audition - I remember Tsumu saying she also read for Riri and for Yuyu, but Tsukui Minami got her role of Gozen without auditioning, presumably because whoever made casting decisions thought she was a good fit. As with the case of D4DJ discussed above, the use of familiar names would entice their fans to a series that they might have passed up otherwise, liaising with the staff would be easier if it were people they worked with before or Bushiroad/Hibiki's own, and there are proven track records of the actresses being able to act both on stage and in a recording booth.

I'm not saying there was favoritism involved, and while some of the earlier members of the Ludvico cast appeared/will appear in the same or new roles this year, there's this unspoken distinction (?) between "the bunch who appear in several Pius productions" like Hirosawa, Umehara, Awatsu and such, and "the bunch associated with the 'main' Bushiroad plays who also voice their characters." Then there's the actresses who moved on from their Ludvico characters and probably won't return to then again (Clara's previous actress got married and had a kid, for one). The members of the cast get along well, but it seems like the execs are more inclined to recast the ones who started out with Ludvico (Ishii, Awatsu, etc) in live action roles than to cast them in roles that call for voice acting (Sanashii, Fujii, Toujou).

Last thread someone mentioned Joran so I remembered to watch it. Seems interesting and a departure from the usual Bushi stuff.

The website said theatre production was in the works, so bushi really does have a hard on for live action.

They got a wrestler to do cross promotion towards the end, it is not Okada.

Kaoruko speaks with a Kyoto accent. It has the connotations of old-fashioned charm, because Kyoto has a lot of history and was the capital in the old days (people from Kyoto get irritated if you tell them to their faces that Tokyo is the capital, because to them, everywhere else is a hick town). It also connotes passive aggressive assholery, which people from Kyoto are masters of, even for Japanese passive aggressiveness.

Perhaps it's no coincidence that most who move/travel eastward to work or study, like Ayasa, use standard (Tokyo) Japanese without their accent since the people around them would speak it. Though as we see ih less serious settings, Ayasa doesn't bother holding back the accent, especially when talking to Kansai-born friends like Aimi, Aiai, Teru, etc.

Putting on the accent can be hard for those who weren't raised in Kansai areas, because their intonation comes out all weird like Haruki (which is why Aiai finds her attempts hilarious) or exaggerated like Yatsuki's actress in BLUE GLITTER.
